Tal-Lajku Pastizzeria & Confectionery: Tasty pastizzi and ftiras in Victoria!

Gozitan Ftira from Tal-Lajku, Victoria, Gozo
    1 more image

During a day trip to Gozo in December 2013 we found ourselves wandering the streets of the capital, Victoria, looking for a quick snack.

That is when we discovered, quite by chance, Tal-Lajku Pastizzeria & Confectionery on Main Gate Street.

This hole-in-the-wall bakery features a number of glass counters displaying a wide selection of pastries and cakes.

I was keen to sample some of the local pastries, so I bought a couple of pastizzi. These small pastries are local to the Maltese islands and I tried two of the more popular varieties; one filled with mushy peas and the other filled with ricotta cheese. They were only small (a couple of mouthfuls at most) but they were tasty and cost a mere €0.25 each.

The pastizzi were never going to fill me up on their own, so I ordered a much larger Gozitan Ftira (€2.00) to go with them. This was a large circular flaky pastry, a bit like burek, and filled with soft Gozo sheep's milk cheese. It was very nice and succeeded where the pastizzi had failed in filling me up! Other versions of ftira that were available included anchovy and tuna.

We shared a few more pastries and pastizzi between us and ordered a couple of cakes; one was a pie tart crust filled with Nutella and topped with three profiteroles and a sugar Santa face and the other was a lemon meringue pie. The total bill for all the pastries and cakes was €6.75.

Tasty pastizzi, ftiras and cakes in the heart of Victoria. Recommended!

  • La Stanza Restaurant: Excellent Rib Eye Steak!

by idanwcd Written Apr 11, 2014
    La Stanza Rib Eye Steak

It was my first time dining here since La Stanza opened under new management. I have to say I really loved the place. The ambiance is very inviting while the food was of prime quality. As a place it might be a little hard to find but those places are usually the ones who offer the best food. It is located in the outskirts of Victoria The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable on the menu and what was on offer. They have a terrace with views over the Citadel but me and my friends dined inside. Since it is actually a converted farmhouse, I found the atmosphere very warm. As a meal I opted for a rib eye steak and as a dessert a delicious black forrest trifle. Excluding drinks both came about EUR 20.00. I found the portions good-sized. This time I did not have a starter but next time I will.

Favorite Dish: I had an irish yearling rib eye steak 200 gram medium well - delicious!

C Seven Restaurant Xlendi: Great Food at Reasonable prices

    by irie30 Updated Feb 17, 2014
    Tagliatelle ai Frutti di Mare

The A' La Carte outside and inside areas, both have an inviting ambience. Candles lit and tables set ready for dinner. Chairs clean. There is a vast choice to choose from in the A' La Carte Menu. The restaurant also has another area which caters for snacks and crepes.

Favorite Dish: I love seafood. I visit this restaurant especially for the tagliatelle ai frutti di mare, for the King Prawns and the Riso Mare Blu. The portions are big and food is very tasty.

    Xlendi restaurants: Local gastronomy

The local gastronomy has mediterannean flavours and is influenced by the Italian style (Sicilia is close). Honestly Xlendi is not a recommended area to be on diet ;-)
With the numerous and good locals restaurants along the Xlendi strand, the temptation is high to try many local specialities as bragioli (minced beed roulade), fenek (rabbit), lampuki (kind of local bream)...

    Rizzles: Local fastfood

There was also pizza, lasagne etc, but they seemed like they would have been on the window far too long. Pastizzi looked good, and since we hadn´t tasted them yet, we took three per person, because it was 0,25e per each, and we hadn´t eat anything for last 10 hours, and the bus back to harbour was leaving soon.
In such hunger they tasted very good. But actually it was only puff pastry with cream cheese inside. I understood that there´s also some with peas.
Those were good fast food, but quite greasy. We ate coupple later at main island also. It left me thinking, how it would taste with some spices in it. Maybe herbs and garlic? Locals might think I´m crazy thinking that :)

    Favorite Dish: pastizzi

    part of the outdoor terrace

We chose to have lunch on our day trip to Gozo here as we could sit on the outdoor terrace right by the sea. Inside the Ta'Nona is a small but cozy bar and the toilet was very clean at lunch time. Both bar and toilet have funny decorations.

Service was very attentive and friendly.

Favorite Dish: I ordered a Pizza Hawaii and was very pleased with the crispy dough. They also serve some Chinese dishes. I actually saw a Chinese man in the kitchen.

While on an organised tour of Gozo we called at this restaurant for our Lunch, it was a typical tourist trip type place with a shop selling Local Products, although it looked nice the food was canteen like and not that good at all. Not a place that you should choose to go if you had a choice and to be honest it seemed out of the way so it is probably only really frequented by tour groups.

For the taste of the Mediterranean @ Xlendi Bay

    by joeco9 Updated Feb 6, 2010

    Xlendi Bay

This in it's self is not a recommendation for any one restaurant but an area with some fine restaurants in Xlendi Bay in Gozo

Favorite Dish: For a perfect way to end of sight seeing ,spend a magical evening by the sea and let your taste buds explore the fine Mediterranean cuisine ( the bay view is free)
A bus ride of less 30min.from Victoria will get you to the bay ,but check the time of the last evening bus (8.pm) thereis always taxi at hand It's hard to recommend any one restaurant as there are a few to choose from the ones we used did not disappoint, two hotels are located on the bay and many hoilday flats ,Xlendi Bay would not be bad place to stay for a few days as we did back in 2003

  • Bistrorant Nemo: Amazingly good food!

This is a fantastic restaurant - the very best we visited in our two weeks in Malta and Gozo! The menu is small but everything on it is cooked to perfection. Our family of four ate there for each of the five nights we spent in Gozo and it appealed to all of us. We ate lasagne; ravioli (all pasta home made); schnizel; Belgian stew; chilli con carne; pork stuffed with Maltese sausage; great crepes; chocolate mousse. Everything was a perfect blend of tastes and textures, the care which goes into the cooking is evident in every bite. We really can't recommend this highly enough!
The location is great too - just back from the water's edge with a beautiful view of the cliffs.
The prices are very reasonable, the wine list good - and there is a great selection of Belgian beer.
Frank, the chef/owner, comes to chat to the diners when he has finished flying around the kitchen - the atmosphere is truly lovely.

A nice balanced menu, check out the day's specialities especially the big viarity of fresh fish. Good adaquate shading and comfortable seating. Last but not least seating a metre away from the sea and standing only about a foot above sea level.

Favorite Dish: A big beefy rib-eye steak. Cooked to perfection. with or without sauce preferably i like it with some pepper sauce on the side. :-)

Jeffreys in San Lawrenz is on the main road to Rabat, once you've dined there it is hard not to go back.
My most favourite item on the menu was thier own Jeffreys Pasta. This dish included sundried black Gozo tomatoes, Superb. I managed to find some in Rabet[Victoria] in a grocery store in the market square and am now almost out so if you know where I can source them I would be obliged.
All the meals I tried from the Jeffreys menu were to die for. Staff were very friendly and the ambience was excellant both inside and out.
Will be booking for a couple of nights when I return to dive Gozo next time.
It is one resturaunt where you will never see chef Ramsey.

I think Xerri Il Bukkett gives the best value food on the island.Everything is there from pizzas and salads to steak and fish, and local favourites including rabbit and bragiolli. The views from the terrace are magnificent and even if you are not hungry a glass of Cisk, the local brew, goes down well. This place is an ideal stop off point for any trip around the island where you will be welcomed by friendly family staff, and if you are lucky, the family cat,Come Here who produces cute kittens on a regular basis.

Favorite Dish: Everything is good but if I had to choose it would be the Bragiolli.
