It's everywhere!: Gozo Glass
krissyM profile photo
krissyM 281 reviews

Glass blowing on the islands of Malta is a tradition steep in history. The diverse colors are inspired by the blue and green waters of the Mediterranean the sandy beaches and the beautiful sunsets.

Gozo Glass is a locally owned family business established in 1989, employing a team of craftsmen from nearby villages at the western end of this tiny nine by four and a half mile island.

You can buy anything from paperweights costing a few dollars to large bowls and vases costing a few hundred dollars. I settled for something in between, a perfume decanter to add to my collection from around the world.

What to buy: Glass of course :)

Xlendi – shopping for knitted jackets

Shops in Xlendi

What to buy: The most authentic "Gozitan" souvenir is definitely Gozo lace. All over the island are small shops selling beautiful lace items and in some of them can be also seen old ladies showing how the lace is done.

Knitted jackets are also on sale everywhere in Gozo.

In Xlendi in particular I found a couple of small shops, located on the promenade or near the central square, selling some beautiful and colorful knitted jackets.

Small ornamental objects made of Gozo limestone are also available in shops, as are glass and clay ornaments.

Victoria open market

Even though Gozo is pretty small, there are a certain number of small shops, mini-markets and lately some renowned European chain outlets have also opened in Gozo.

In Victoria's main square, Pjazza Indipendenza, is a traditional open market.

Shops generally open Monday to Fridays between 08:00 – 12:30 and 16:00 – 19:00. Saturdays, most shops open only till 12:00.

What to buy: Gozo's honey is famous.

The ones who want to bring something specific from Gozo back home can buy thyme honey or Carob syrup from the peddlers displaying their products near the temples in Ggantija.

Another tasty attraction here are the cactus's fruits, which for a couple of liras can be also bought from these sellers.

What to buy: Despite the fact that the site of the temples is not as rich in souvenirs shops as others in Malta, some small shops located at the entrance to the site or on the northern part of the temples, at the end of the road bringing to the entrance, are selling lace (the Gozo lace is famous), post cards, books and other small souvenirs.

prepare your credit card!

This is a shopping complex situated in Victoria...the capital of GOZO...just a few minutes walk downhill from the main bus terminus or stop on a bus stop adjacent to it.
Here you will find everything under one roof from redecorating your sitting room to a toothbrush & .......if you still have some thousands of dollars still in your account after your visit and shopping at this centre there is also a new car showroom for top model cars such as BMW.......

What to buy: In Gozo it is famous for the lace making such as table covers.
Cheeselets are also a speciality in Gozo and also one can find them in MALTA the ones made in GOZO are rather special.
Gozo wine should be high on the list for those who love to finish off there dinner with a glass of wine.

What to pay: Be ready to spend from 20euros to 50 euros on Souveniers,cheeslets,wine...but a few thousands more if you are going for the BMW!!

Noel Store (on the right)

When I'm in Gozo I like to stop at this tiny store and pick up a few goodies to take back home with me in Malta. Everything is locally made and tastes wonderfully fresh. There is a lot to choose from and all look yummy so I have a tendency to take one of each!

What to buy: Apart from fresh fruit and vegetables, you can find a selection of preserves. On my last visit, I picked up some Helwa with chocolate (this is a sweet made out of Tahini, sugar, almonds and covered with chocolate), large fruit capers, a jar of dried tomatoes and some pure honey.

What to pay: The Helwa with chocolate cost Lm1.25, the large fruit capers 50cents, the dried tomatoes Lm1.25 and the pure honey Lm1.50.

lacemaker at work

As with Malta itself, Gozo is also known for it's lace.

There are also many small stalls to buy from, and as is shown in the picture, sometimes the ladies are on the street doing their lacemaking.

I had permission to take this ladies photograph having talked to her for quite a while and bought some lace from her. She started learning the craft of lacemaking when she was 10 years old.

What to pay: various prices, but nothing extortionate.

What to buy: I bought a nice handmade tablecloth from this woman in Xlendi vilage. This was supposed to be an original Maltese art, however the same kind of art is found today in Crete island too !
