Calypso Cave, Gozo
Calypso was the female sorcerer (or half-godess?) that held Odysseus in her spell - and in the cave for 7 years.
I don´t know how she managed that, since the Cave is neither very big nor really comfortable...
but it has a nice view of the beach: Ramla Bay.
On the picture you can see the view. In the sea in front of the beach is a darker line, This was a wall that was built in a war. Now the ground level sunk and it is under the water.
My guidebook said, that this place isn´t worth of visiting, it´s just a cave, and not even interesting looking. The hop on hop off bus stopped there anyway. My husband stayed in the bus, and I went there with the other tourists. There were poor little hole to get in the cave. Two of us did get in, and they said to us others: Don´t bother, there´s nothing in there. And I was also worried if I would fall when going in.
More intresting was the view from up there. But if you need to skip something, I would say skip this first!
There can be locals guiding you with candles (according my guidebook) but it wont give anything specail extra to visit if we belive the book.
The island claims to host the cave where Homer's Odysey, spent time with Calypso before returning home, to Ithaka.
Go there, but not for the cave itself, as there is nothing really interesting to see in there. The beauty is in the view, mostly because you will have the chance to see the -probably- one and only beach on both islands!
Allegedly, Gozo is the island where Odysseus stranded and was kept by the beautiful nymph Callypso. Callypso Cave is located a few kilometers from the picturesque village Xaghra, above a green and fertile plateau on Gozo. The bay is called Ramla Bay and one of the few
with a beautiful sandy beach. The cave itself is less spectacular: For a few cents you can
get a candle from locals and then climb down the holes. The cave itself is quite high above
sea level - for critics an indicator that it may NOT have been the real Callypso cave. (Another
option is the Odysseus Cave on Mljet Island, Croatia.)
