The Inland sea is a lagoon which is connected to the open water via a tunnel through the cliffs. A small boat can take you through into the cave and tunnel on a calm day.
The Inland sea is popular with swimmers and snorkellers who can cool down in it's turquoise waters.

Inland Sea close up
Here's a a close up view of where you can swim through the tunnel in the inland sea to the Azure Window, or where the boats would travel through.
As you can see by the waves it was not fit for that excursion.
The natural wonder of Il-Qawra, the inland sea is just a few steps from the Azure Window - it was smaller than I had imagined. In summer boats make the short trip through the entrance seen in the lower cliff wall and comes out at the Azure window. Would love to do that sometime but in winter it had such a deserted abandoned feel to the place with all the beach huts and barsall closed up. It mwas more like a ghost town. We climbe the little hill by the chapel there to look down on the inland sea.
The inland sea
This is the "inland sea". At first sight, looks like a lake. It isn't though, as it is connected to the sea through this cave-chanel you can see behind me.
Here I am waiting for my turn, to board in one of those small fishing boats, and through this cave, to sail out to the archipelago.
The Inland Sea
The Inland Sea is one of the many inlets in the coast of Gozo. Because there is small channel out to the coast it is quite warm to swim in. You can swim through the channel and snorkel the beautiful blue depths on the other side. Exhilarating!!
