The salts pans near to Marsalforn though were really worth seeing - we spent quite some time here just walking around them - I found them fascinating - and taking in the views of the lovely coastal scenery too. The salts pans date from 1740 and are still in use - but not in winter time.
On the northern coast of Gozo, north of the village of Zeebug and west of Marsalforn, is an area of saltpans. Salt has been collected here for centuries in the time-honoured way of natural evaporation from pools carved from the natural rock. The saltpans cover quite an extensive area and form a very picturesque backdrop. The landscape here is also quite interesting, with a lot of erosion having taken place. Some of the resulting overhangs look quite spectacular and you have to think that they won't remain standing for much longer. A fort stands on the highly eroded headland nearby.
