In the 1950’s it was decided that the local parish church was too small for the increasing numbers so in 1951 work started on the foundations of the new church. The whole village helped and what is so special is that the new church is built on the same site as the old one! After twenty years of hard and sometimes dangerous work the 75 mtr dome was completed complete with a huge cross on top.
Some of the highlights inside this lovely church are the marble altar, the famous statue of St John the Baptist and also the marble floor. Part of the old church still remains. You can also go up the tower to get good views over the island.

    Rotunda Church

The old church was too small to serve the needs of the community, so the need to build a new one emerged.

Work on the foundations started on November 19th, 1951. After 20 years of hard and sometimes dangerous work, the dome was completed, and on June 24th l971, a huge cross was placed on top of the majestic dome.

The consecration of the church was performed by H.L.Mgr. Nicholas G. Cauchi, Bishop of Gozo on June 17th l978. It coincided with the 300th Anniversary of the elevation of Xewkija as a Parish in 1678.

The church was built on the site of the old church, and eight ferroconcrete pillars covered with limestone are supporting the Dome, weighing 45,000 tons.
Height of Dome 75 mtrs. Circumference of Dome 85 mtrs.
