view of the bay

Favorite thing: Not as well known in Malta as its nearby neighbour Marsaxlokk but perhaps more of a real harbour town and less tourist trappings .
A lovely place to stroll and have a lazy lunch at a waterside cafe. It was a delightful time here on our last day in Malta and we were glad to make it here after a last trip in to Valletta in the morning.

Marsascala

Favorite thing: Maarsaskala or Marsascala as it is sometimes spelt, was the scene of the last Turkish assault on Malta in 1641. The turks managed to land but were beaten back by the Knights who soon built a fortress on the headland to deter any future attacks.

St. Thomas Tower

Favorite thing: A bit further round from the salt pans - near the large Hotel Jerma Palace - is St Thomas Tower - one of many fortifications that were built along the maltese coast.to deter maurading Turks and other invaders.

Marsaskala

Favorite thing: Across the bay you have a picturesque view of the pastel coloured harbourside houses, cafes and bars. Its just a 20 minute bus ride from valletta to reach here - bus numbers 19, 20 or 21 can be taken.

salt pans

Favorite thing: A 2km stroll along the promenade (opposite side to cafes) brings upou round to St Thomas's Bay. Along the way there are rocky ledges for bathing (not allowed in the marina end) and you will also see thhese salt pans - although they were not as impressive as the ones we saw on Gozo.

reflection time :-)

Favorite thing: With the campanile of the church at one end of the bay Marsaskala had a venetian atmosphere to it - complimneted by many italian cafes along the waterfront.

harbour scene

Favorite thing: Just as in Marsaxlokk the harbour has many colourful boats gently bobbing up and down in the water.

Marsaskala - Pretty as a Picture

A pretty bay in Malta some 9 km southwest of Valletta. A lovely place for a spot of lunch one January afternoon with plenty of italian restaurants to choose from .

For the passeggiata.....

I've been to Marsascala twice, both times in the evening, both times to eat. I'm not pretending to know anything very much about it except: a) it has a large and interesting harbour (well,...
