Favorite Dish: Date cake:
Dates are not common on the maltese islands, however the locals like to use them in producing sweets. In this picture is a really delicious example, different from common chocolate cakes and absolutely delicious.

In the heart of Mdina, is a really unique tea garden with the name of Fontanella. This place hosts an amazing view of almost half of Malta, from where one can also sea the Mosta dome and the Portomaso tower. However, Fontanella is famous for its cakes. The selection of chocolate, dates, apple, strawberry and other cakes makes the visitor very tempted to try them…

There are various other cafes in Mdina tucked behind doorways with quaint courtyards. We peeped into this one which looked intriguing....but couldn't manage another cake in a short space of time..not even me!
btw inner courtyards like this feature in many houses as gardens were not permitted in the silent city.

Favorite Dish: Renowned for its scrummy cakes - especially chocolate :-)) and its home made pastizzis - little pastries filled with peas or cheese. - we sampled some of each. Indeed we noticed other cafes around Malta advertise cakes as Fontanella cakes ..but its great to sample them in the original location too.

Much has been said already about the Fontanella Tearooms here on VT that is was an obvious choice for a cake and coffee whilst taking in the far reaching views from its rooftop terrace. It was quite windy during our visit - bit too cold to sit out so we were glad they had plenty of space indoors too.

By far the most popular tea house in this part of the island famous for its delicious homemade cakes and spectacular views of most of Malta from the bastions of Mdina. Can be a bit crowded sometimes especially on Sunday afternoons.

Located on the walls of Mdina with an excellent view at the surrounding landscape is the Fontanella Tea Garden.
It has super cakes and good Tea/Coffee with it.
Don´t forget to have a look at Mdina itself: the architecture is a mixture between arabian an mediterranean elements.
Favorite Dish: Chocolate Cake and Cappucino,

I think Fontanella is fantastic. Our guide book suggested we give it a miss and try the Ciapetti instead, but we didn't and we're glad that we didn't. We loved the place so much we went back again later in the day for more!
The Fontanella has a roof garden as well as a shady courtyard and some really cool indoor "open plan" seating areas, so you can take your pick depending on how hot you like to be at dinner!
Favorite Dish: I had a "garnished pie" - they did a variety and I had cheese & spinach. It was delicious, and a lot bigger than I expected. But that was to be the norm here - everything was bigger than expected!
Take a look at the travelogue for more Fontanella Pics.

This is one of the smallest restaurants you’re likely to find on any of your journeys. It’s really cosy and friendly and even if you’re not in the mood for a full meal you should check it out for a drink or two.
Opening hours for restaurants and bars are always a bit of a hit-and-miss affair in Malta especially in the afternoon period, so it is good to see that this is one of the few places in the area that is open throughout the entire day and not closed for the afternoons.

A: Mdina is the most romantic of all. The fortress is always silent and gives one a very special feeling. Rabata and Mosta are not so majestic. As for size, all are huge
