I managed to find a scehdule of the bus routes to University and from they are very useful. There are two bus stops are just situated outside University just opposite the skating park one goes down to Valletta and the opposite is on the other side going towards St Julians, Sliema and st Paul's Bay.
Whilst inside University there is another one just opposite the hospital Mater Dei there are many routes from there.

So, if you can pick up a pamphlet from one of the bus drivers it will save you a heap of hot air having to ask. Maltese bus drivers are not always the friendliest. I think it depends on which day you catch them. Sometimes they're no problem.
