Sumatra Restaurant: A little Sumatra in Malta

by Bilimari Updated Apr 4, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I admit, I start missing Asian food especially after several days of eating out every meal. So, when I saw this restaurant, I was happy to go inside the door.

It's a casual and friendly atmosphere, you can probably bring kids, too, if they know how to behave.

Favorite Dish: They serve Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian cuisine.
I had a bit of everything (as you can see in photo), sea food, chicken, port, and beef. All good. The fried rice was good, too.

They weren't busy when I went, but I'm sure they get much busier on the weekend and/or in peak season.

    Good aisan food

The Jolly Fisherman: Pizza is Brill

by ellierae Updated Apr 4, 2011

The place was in Gozo, just by the side of the sea, it had a good selection of dishes and a pizza big enough for two people worked out at just £2. The staff was very helpful and polite.

Favorite Dish: Pizza. The size would fill two people and the price was good.

  • Sushimed Restaurant: Best Sushi Restaurant in Malta

by borgpatsy Written Jan 30, 2011

Yesterday we went to this brand new restaurant, Sushimed. Apart from being a stone away from Paceville, which is great because you can eat and then continue having fun!! This restaurant offers a great variety of Sushi and also Mediterranean food, that's why its called Sushimed!! Well, the owners are very helpful, they helped us to choose, (as we're not experts in sushi) and if we didn't like something they promptly offered us an alternative. Food and atmosphere were great. I would recomand this restaurant to everyone who would like to try sushi!!!

  • Allegro Andante: Give this one a wide berth

by Davidcpm Written Oct 26, 2010

Situated on the Quayside at St Julien Malta, beautiful location . Unfortunately theexperince did not live up to the setting . We had a light lunch at the Allegro Andante. We should have taken note of the filthy table cloths before we sat down. Service was very slow, when the food arrived it was very disappointing. chicken was actually reconstituted chicken nuggets, the anti pas to mix comprised Zooey vegetables , at €7.50 a plate . The mussels and chips were the only edible food . Finally, the credit card machine " was not working " . Strongly suggest you avoid this place.

  • Allegro Andante: Lots better to choose from

by bittentwice Written Sep 11, 2010

From the two occasions that I visited this restaurant I have come to the conclusion that the management rely heavily on the natural ambience of its location. Instead of taking advantage of being able to attract clients because of its beautiful location and respecting us for visiting, for the second time we were thoroughly disappointed and wouldn't go there for free.

    Favorite Dish: I wouldn't know!

    Salvino's: Great pleasure @ Valetta

    by Dr.Styranki Written Aug 13, 2010

The first impression was not so great as there was a kind of plumbing problem next to the restaurants entrance. However the furniture was modern and clean and lunch menu was served promptly.

The location is just comfortably out of main tourist hassle, yet not too far away

Favorite Dish: Sea urchin pasta was best I have ever tasted.

  • La Luna de Sera: Outstanding food and service! Yes, it can be found

    by Scoobydoo5000 Updated Apr 26, 2010

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Near the church in Naxxar, La Luna de Sera is almost certainly the classiest restaurant in Malta. It's part of the Palazzo Parisio and it's a place for romantic dinners and very special occasions. Not cheap, but the food is absolutely amazing. Expect to pay around 70 Euros a head including a bottle of good wine. Lots of little surprise extra courses. Service is just impeccable. Really attentive waiters who actually know all about proper service. How novel in Malta.

Favorite Dish: It's all just amazing and truly outstanding.

  • New Tower Palace Sliema: Disgusting food thieves on price

by whitemaninjungle Written Mar 26, 2010

The restaurant at this hotel is a blatant rip-off and is stealing from the clients. I dined here in June 2009 ordering a bottle of wine from the menu and notating the price. When the check came the price was FOUR TIMES HIGHER than the listed menu price. I complained to the waiter and said I would not pay the overcharged amount and was told it was a misprint and I would have to pay for their blatant mistake. As I refused to pay the incorrect amount but did offer to pay the listed price on the menu, the waiter threatened to call the police! I have NEVER IN ALL MY LIFE IN ALL MY TRAVELS been treated and so obviously ripped off and stolen from fraudulently by a restaurant as I was at the New Tower Palace. Not wanting to deal with the police on my holiday, I paid the thieves for the overcharged wine. I advise all to stay away from this hotel (note the horrible reviews) and the thieving restaurant. Food was disgusting as well with only microwaved frozen food.

    Favorite Dish: Nothing! All horrible.

    Trabuxu: Trabuxu

    by pure1942 Written May 10, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Trabuxu is a wine bar located not far off Triq il-Repubblika and quite close to our hotel, so we popped in here a few times. The place has a great range of foreign and local wines and is reasonably priced. However, wine isn’t the only offering here as they produce great platters to go with your wine and a few more substantial meals (pasta and meat dishes) It is the platters that make this place worthwhile though, with cheese platters, pate and meat platters to go with the wine of your choice. The place gets very busy and you may have to book a table in advance.

    La Cave: La Cave

    by pure1942 Written May 10, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

After splashing out on previous nights, we went for a cheaper option this time and went on a lonely guide recommendation of La Cave. The pizza/pasta menu sounded good to us and the location in a 400 year old cellar close to the Auberge de Castille was very charming. Not the best of Valletta’s dining options but the Maltese pizza (Peppered Goats Cheese, Maltese Sausage and Olives) and bottle of Gozo Red went down very well. Very reasonably priced too.

    Don Berto: Don Berto

    by pure1942 Written May 10, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Ate in Don Berto in Vittoriosa one evening and where pleased with our choice. The restaurant is located close to the Maritime Museum on the Vittoriosa Wharf and overlooks the Dockyard Creek and Marina. We sat outside on a lovely balcony giving great views over the harbour and across to Valletta.

Favorite Dish: I had a tasy meal of barbequed rack of spare ribs with caramalised onion and roast veg, while Denise had crab and lobster filled ravioli. Washed it all down with a nice Marsovin Red from Northern Malta.
Good food, good setting and reasonable price...perfect.

    Fusion 4: Fusion 4

    by pure1942 Written May 10, 2009

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Fusion Four was a real find for us in Valletta. The restaurant is located in a cellar in St. John’s Cavalier, part of the Valletta outer fortifications. The restaurant has a small but delicious menu of fusion dishes such as Fillet Steak wrapped in Parma Ham, Red Thai Curry Chiken Thighs, Mediteranean Prawns and Pork fillet wrapped in Pancetta.
The proprietors of the restaurant are extremely welcoming and friendly and did everything possible to ensure we had an enjoyable meal. The restaurant has a small museum at the back which was there when they took over the property and they delighted in showing us the small mechanically powered display showing traditional Maltese life. Onother bonus is a beautiful outdoor courtyard sitting between the Bastion towers and looking out onto the entrance of the Main Gate of the city.
The restaurant also has an extensive wine menu.
The restaurant was more expensive than average and more than we would usually spend on a meal when away on a trip but we agree afterwards it was worth every cent.

Favorite Dish: I had the fillet steak wrapped in parma ham with wine based sauce and accompanied by roast veg and potatoe and Denise had the huge Thai Prawns (messy to shell, but delicious...haven’t seen prawns that big since Brazil). Washed it down with a nice Chilean Red.
Topped the meal with coffee on the outdoor terrace and the best dessert of my life (White Chocolate and Honeycomb Mousse) while Denise finished with an un-heavy banofee pie.

Cafe de Paris Restaurant at Marsaxlokk offers a wide range of inexpensive seafood served in a casual atmosphere accompanied by panaromic view of the sea. In fact the whole seafront is dotted with numerous inexpensive seafood restaurants. The summer can be quite hot at Marsaxlokk. This is a favourite place for those who need a break from the chaos of the city!
