Giorgio: A Great Place to Take a Break!

by mazzap

Giorgio is a café in Sliema across the raod from the waterfront. We chose it for a drink and snack after taking a harbour cruise. It proved to be an ideal retreat from the very hot sun. Air-conditioned too. Huge display of cakes and savoury pastries on offer. Difficult to choose, but what we had were all lovely. Efficient staff and very clean interior. Local hot pastizzi (ricotta cheese or peas in filo pastry). Various cakes and gateaux but the chocolate one in particular was very good.

Ta' Kris Restaurant & Maltese Bistro: Traditional Maltese Food

by Xemx

This is a lovely semi-formal restaurant situated in a tiny alley in Sliema. You can't just walk straight into this restaurant...you have to bang on the door to get attention! Once this task is accomplished, you are then greeted with friendly staff and it's worth the extra couple of minutes waiting at the door :-) The ambience and surroundings are nice and relaxing. The floors are covered with colourful old Maltese tiles and there is an antique oven...the restaurant is also known as il-Kcina (The Kitchen) to the Maltese. It was very busy when we visited, although it was a Thursday evening, so it's a good idea to make a reservation. Both my friend and I ordered the same dishes. We had a seafood salad which was lovely and fresh. It had an assortment of seafood such as mussels, octopus, prawns, etc. For the main meal we chose fresh sea-bass with roast potatoes and vegetables. The fish was...

The Malata Restaurant: French and Mediterranean Cuisine

by Xemx

This restaurant has been around for a long, long time. When I was young, I loved (and still do) to eat Ravioli, so I remember being taken here for a big plate Ricotta Filled Ravioli with Tomato Sauce just like my dad used to make. Over the years the restaurant has changed and was recently restored. You go down a flight of steps to access the restaurant which is in a vaulted cellar of a typical Valletta palazzo, however, it also has an outdoor terrace with tables and chairs for when the weather is sunny. The walls of the restaurant are covered with amusing caricatures of portraits of past and present members of parliament. The food is prepared by the French chef, Fabrice Lemoniere. Well apart from the Ravioli, which has become even tastier and looks real sophisticated :-) I like the fish dishes, such as grilled Swordfish served with baked potatoes and sauteed vegetables. For...

Zest: A posh, trendy restaurant for a fun dinner

by JERICO

Zest is one of the newer restaruants on the island, build over the Hotel Julien in St. Julians (next to the McDonalds, just across from the eyesore Love sign!). When you walk in, you'll notice the restaurant looks more like something you'd find in London or New York than what you tend to find elsewhere in Malta. You'll also notice that it's full of people. The food is excellent (a mix of continental, Thai, Japanese - not fusion though, just a varied menu), the staff is very courteous, and they have a very good wine list. This is a great place to have a upbeat, elegant dinner before heading to the clubs and bars in Paceville, just a 5 minute walk down the street. The sushi is very good, but the portions are small so you're better off going to Zen if you only want sushi. Otherwise, the teppenyaki beef is awesome, and the fish plates are tasty as well (made, of course, with the typically...

Zen: Superb sushi!

by JERICO

Ok so you didn't go to Malta to eat sushi... but if you get a craving for it, give Zen a visit. They are located in the Portomaso complex in St. Julians (go to the Hilton roundabout, and walk down the stairs towards the marina - it's on the left side of that stairway when you're heading down). The food is excellent, and the quality is as good as I've found elsewhere, and the people are very friendly. The decor is minimalist and a bit trendy, and provides a classy place for a nice dinner.

Cafe Marquis: Sitting in the Square Watching the World Go By

by Xemx

I enjoy going to this cafe when it's a nice sunny day and I'm in Valletta. As you can see from the photo, it has tables outside in St John's Square where it's lovely to sit and have something to eat or drink. It's always busy in this area, especially during shopping hours, but not so on Sunday mornings when I like to visit. The staff are all friendly and always have a smile on their faces when they are serving you. The meals served here are just the normal quick meals which you would find in a cafe or snack bar in Malta....pizzas, sandwiches, hamburgers and Maltese ftiras (this is a flat Maltese bread spread with tomato paste and olive oil, filled with tuna, olives, capers etc.)

Street fruit!

by sabe

Everywhere on Malta you'll see them - the streetvendors selling fruit. A lot of them sell fruitsalad in plastic containers. These are in most cases great!! I lived off of those for the entire week more or less, since the food in restaurants is usually kinda greasy. The Maltese doesn't have the tradition of going out to restaurants, most of them eat at home, so most of the places serve either Brittish pub food or Pasta/Pizza places.

St. Julian's area

by joanj

If you are in the St. Julian's area, and in need of a rest and refreshment, then go to one of the cafe/restaurants at this new marina for a drink with a view. The new Hilton hotel is to the left, and upmarket private apartments on the right. The sizes of the yachts were awesome. This area has been refurbished within the last five years. just had a coffee, but it was in china cups, witha biscuit alongside, and the coffee came in a china pot, with china creamjug and sugar bowl.

All Good Restaurants: Local Fish Dishes

by mazzap

Malta is a great place to try seafood - fishing is a main source of income for a lot of Maltese people, and the catch of the day can always be found in local restaurants. The picture shows a typical Maltese seafood meal that we tried in a restaurant in St Julians. A good accompanying wine in Malta can be very inexpensive too - a real bonus!! Lampouki is a fish that you will see on most menus - but it is seasonal! Stuffed squid is another speciality - as seen in the picture. From what I can recall, it contained olives, rice, pork, and thyme amongst other ingredients.
