Stefano: Maltese and italian

by global_explorer

Stefano are a small and intimate place with no windows, but there is small courtains on the stonewall giving impression of covered windows, making it even more cosey. The staff was friendly and the service exellent. Malta lies close to Italy, and have adopted many of its pastadishes. However what i really want to recomend is the seafood. The maltese know how to treat the stuff, fish and squid alike, and it is usually as fresh as you can get it. All (supposed to) delivered the same day. The nationaldish of Malta is Fenek-rabitstew with garlick and other spice. It must be tasted!! Stefano Restaurant close to Spinola bay, Valetta, specialise in italian food like pastadishes. They also serve exellent seafood. Here i tried fenekfor the first time and wasn’t dissappointed at all.

--: The king of bread

by global_explorer

Malta is the bread heaven in the Med area. Often in the Medregion you will have a hard time to find anyting else than loaflike bread, with more air than flour in it. That sort of bread you eat until you are tired, not fed. “Airbread” is to be found here to, but the shops will offer a variety of more substantial stuff, especially in the morning. Try to track down a shop specialised in bread. The bread is baked in woodfuelled stoneovens, giving it a delicious crust and fine taste. I love it!! If you want to visit the bakeries in their rushperiod early in the morning, visit Qormi, also called the city of bread. In certain areas the smell from the bakeries fills the streets and fuels the appetite. Then there is the small cackes sold many places. My favouritespot of getting them was the stands between the busstation and the citygate of old Valletta as i passed by at least once a day. Those...

Harleys: mmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

by helsbels

Quiet little bar where you can eat or just drink, friendly local staff and oustanding freshly cooked food. I had fresh swordfish from the specials- with chips and salad, which was about 3.50 maltese lira, about 5 british pounds or a bit more. delicious! also had the combo which came with the nicest ribs i've probaly ever had, and all sorts of other lovely things!

Foods to Try: Local Cuisine

by seagoingJLW

For soup, try minestra, thicker than the Italian minestrone, or a fish soup.Under the Italian influence, try antipasto, risotto, pasta and pizzas.Try timpana, a meat, eggplant (aubergine). tomato and macaroni pie.For fish, try lampuka, pixxispad, dentici, and cerna.Bragoli is a beef roll stuffed with bacon, breadcrumbs, hard boiled egg, parsley and a touch of garlic first fried, then simmered with onions and wine.

ALLEGRO ANDANTE: Eating out in Sliema & St Julians 5

by jayhawk2000

Probably the best Italian restaurant we visited. They have a beautiful terrace opening out onto Spinola Bay with its fishing boats. I'm not sure of the address, but it has a prominent seafront location next to several other restaurants just past Pulcinella (above). They have authentic dishes like saltimbocca but I really enjoyed the peppery chicken served with potatoes that swam in saffron, fennel, shallots and olive oil.

Ristorante Sottovoce: Fresh Fish, Shell fish and great pasta dishes

by romal

...an elegant fish restaurant, serving local and Mediterranean dishes....excellentstarters, fresh pasta dishes (not pre -cooked)and a good variety of local fish... their fish soup is something you have to experience.Small but comfortable, pleasing background music, nice decor with various paintings by Maltese artists and really friendly service, waiters serve you with a genuine smile.A good selection of Maltese produced wines and a really amazing house wine (red only) Fish soup......do not miss the pepata di cozze ( a saute' of mussels )....spaghetti coi ricci di mare.....( sea urchins ) ...rice or pasta al sepia nero (squid ink)all fish served ( grilled or poached) is supplied by the local fishermen and snorkel divers and not from fish farms.

Maltese pastries: Maltese pastries

Not all of them were equally good but they were huge and filling and yes, some of them were very nice. The pastries reminded me strongly of English pastries but the fillings were different.I had one with mashed peas inside, and another with cheese.

Annette's place: Dinner at home

by ATLC

We were invited to a friend's house. And what kind of house! A city mansion, more like it, filled with beautiful antiques and objets d'art. We were served a typical Maltese fish pie and the setting was just perfect: lovely dinner table outside on the terrace.

A cocktail: No alcohol

by ATLC

I usually don't drink alcohol because I want to stay alert and awake. But what's left to drink are soda's and water. You get so tired of that! Everyone enjoying a huge choice of beers, wines and other drinks and for non-alcohol drinkers there's usually hardly any choice. But Hotel San Gorg had a nice selection of delicious cocktails without alcohol.Yummy! Bluebird(true, the photo turned out a bit green, but it really was blue!)
