Bay Street Shopping: The Trendiest Place to Shop in Malta

by mazzap

A medium sized shopping area set on 3 floors of a purpose built block - there is a hotel within the complex too. All of it under 2 years old. There are several designer shops, an amusement hall, a few restaurants and bars, and the inevitable...McDonalds! Some more shops are located outside the building, very close by.

Local Confectionery Shops and Kiosks: Traditional Maltese Easter Sweets - Figolli

by Xemx

It is customary for Maltese women (and some men :-) to make Figolli for Easter. If you visit Malta around this time of the year you will see them in colourful displays in shop windows. Don't be tempted to buy them from the first place you come across because you will be greatly disappointed. I usually make my own, but if I were to buy them I would go for the ones from Cafe Cordina (244 Republic Street, Valletta), Santa Lucia Confectionery (Old Railway Track, Attard) and Tivoli Confectionery (Manwel Magri Street, Hamrun). Figolli are almond pastries cut out to represent symbolic figures. The traditional shapes are men, women, fish and baskets. They are decorated with glace and royal icing and an Easter egg wrapped in colourful foil to finish off the decoration. EUR 6 to 8

The craftvillage

by global_explorer

Ta’Quali craftvillage occupies a WW2 airstrip used by the Royal air force, and the nissenhuts of those days now have a more peacefull function. Here all sorts of craftsmen works, from carpenters to jewelers. There is made pottery, streetsigns and beautiful glassware. The funny about this place is that visitors are supposed to look, some places even provide chairs for that purpose. And we experienced no annoying saleattempts. Pottery, furniture, glass, jewelery. The maltese filigreesilver are good value, so is lacework.

N/A: Closing time

by nigelw6443

I arrived in Valletta around midday and found that it wasn't too long before the shops started closing, although on the main street some of the more well known stores stayed open. Generally though most places close at about 2:00 pm for siesta!

Lace: Lace

by ATLC

One thing you'll find a lot in Malta is handmade lace. I really thought it looked a lot like what you have in Brussels but then I have no knowledge of it at all.If you like it, you can shop for lace to your hearts content. The photo shows that one of my hostesses also tried a hand at lacemaking herself. She told me it was positively relaxing to do this. I guess you can only make lace if you concentrate fully. Looks very complicated!

Valletta: General shopping

by mark_mjb

This is a general tip in that all of Malta's leading outlets are found in Malta's capital city - Valletta. U can find practically anything here... Just have to look around... which is actually fun because u also get to see a city whose first stone was laid 500 yrs ago (see also must see activities). Shops include:- clothes, shoes etc..- IT&T- Household items- books, music, games, toys, multimedia etc- souveniers, local trade- specialised Prices are reasonable

Ceramics of every description

by Vintom

Malta is a country of colour, not only in it's buses and boats, but also in it's pottery.Every colour imaginable can be found among the many items on sale all over the island. I particularly liked these ceramic birds that were on sale at a local craft shop, they were so vibrant and look great hanging up. They are not expensive and make nice gifts to bring home. Ceramics are quite reasonabley priced.

Wignacourt Jewellery: 18ct Gold is a real bargain

by ellierae

This shop is set out with with cabinets around the side and is very well lit so you can see all the goods on offer. I bought a pair of 9ct gold earrings from this shop just down the road I bought a 18ct gold Maltese Cross for £6.50. The Maltese 9ct gold ring I bought was from Gozo and for £1 more I could have bought it in 18ct gold for £8 just around the corner. Jewellery is cheap and looks nice, but a word of warning price things up first they are a lot of jewellery shops on Bugibba Promenade. Depends on what you have in mind, you might be able to haggle
