Towns, Villages, Roadsides: Market Vans

by steventilly

(This is probably just an option if you are self-catering)Lots of small farmers sell their own produce off vans and lorries that they park in town streets or at the roadside between towns. Apparently these farmers still use more traditional methods than the intensive agriculture of the rest of Europe and the fruit and veg should taste better. Well, it was nice but my tastebuds are obviously not defined enough. The food sold here is reasonably priced, we particularly liked the melons (50c for a large one).

I'm not going to mention any shops in particular, however shops are open from Monday - Saturday from 9:00am - 1:00pm then open again from 4:00pm - 7:00pm everywhere in Malta. Groceries and supermarkets are generally open all day long, some with late night shopping on one particular day. Best well-stocked supermarkets are: Tower Supermarket in High Street, Sliema and Smart Supermarket, Birkirkara. If you're in desperate need for clothes, shoes, toys, luggages etc late at night, then fear not, we have one complex called Bay street Complex in St. George's Road St. Julian's which are open from 10:00am till 10:00pm all day from Monday to Sunday! There are also loads of fabulous restaurants to choose from, huge great play area for the kids, and always some sort of entertainment going on!http://www.baystreet.com.mt/ check it out!

Fish market in Marsaxlokk

by tini58de

Every Sunday there is the traditional fish market in Marsaxlokk. You find lots of wonderful fish there, vegetables, fruit, but also other items of more touristy nature. It is a lot of fun to stroll around there!

TEXTILES, LEATHER, FRUIT & VEG.

Buy clothes and shoes made in Malta. The Maltese were lucky enough to get rid of the British/Nato bases, which makes them less of a target. To make up for the loss of the British naval base, Malta has developed industry and tourism. Industry contributes 40% of the GDP and employs 27% of the workforce. Industry includes Malta Drydocks, Malta Shipbuilding, the container terminal at Marsaxlokk / Birzebuggia, textiles, leatherworking... Wages tend to be low, but so are prices, and the GWU and Labour have tried hard to ensure a comfortable standard of living for workers. Tourism brings in about 40% of of Malta's national income. Agriculture is hindered by lack of soil and water. But there is production, part of the year, of tomatoes, cabbages, onions, strawberries, cut flowers, potatoes, vines.... The biggest landowner is the Church.

Local Crafts

by nigelw6443

Malta has many local crafts, the most popular being the woolen sweaters, glassware, silver jewellery, wicker work and lace. Most of the items can be bought in the many souvenir shops and these are cheaper than going direct to the source. I went to a glass blowing factory and the prices were higher than the tourist shops. Mdina was more expensive than Bugibba for example. Obviously look around before you buy.

Local wines

The Maltese have a good selection of local wines. My personal favourites were Marsovin´s "Cabernet Sauvignon" and "La Valette (vin rouge)".

You can buy tourist momentous among many other things but you will sometimes find the same thing a little cheeper elsewhere. My favourite shop was M&S for the crisps.
