In the courtyard of the museum by nhcram Malta At War Museum is situated in one of the three cities near to Valetta. The tour starts with a film showing original footage from world war two and then the tour continues with a guide through the air-raid shelter. The tour shows how the people lived during those dark days of the 1940’s The shelter is complete with a birthing room and infirmary. This tour is not for the claustrophobic of you as some of the tunnels are narrow and also very low. Well worth a visit. Triton Fountain Valetta by nhcram Just outside the city gate and the fortified walls of Valletta is Freedom Square. In the middle of the square is the Triton fountain which was built in the 1950's. The bus station is built around the square and although it looks like chaos it is in fact very organised. Leave a Comment Address: Valetta Bus station

The Hypogeum by dowdow Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Malta which you musn't miss seeing. The hypogeum was re-opened five years ago, in 2000, after extensive restoration works. It is a 5000 year old prehistoric burial site and the only well-preserved site of its kind in the world. There is also a permanent exhibition, but of course, the highlight is the 40-min guided tour of the underground burial site itself, which consists of several halls, chambers and passages on three levels; the upper level being the oldest (3600-3300 BC). The hypogeum is open Mon-Sun and there is a tour every hour, starting at 9.00am. You have to pre-book the tickets since only a maximum of 80 visitors are allowed in each day. Tickets can be bought from the Hypogeum itself or from the National Museum of Archeology in Valletta. Call the number below to reserve your tickets. * Children under 5 years are not admitted. Good Friday procession by dowdow The Holy Week in Malta is usually celebrated in April, so if you are coming to Malta in these days you surely musn't miss a Good Friday procession. The celebrations and functions that take place during this period are a mixture of religious faith, folklore and culture are an important event in the maltese calendar. Good Friday is celebrated in many towns and villages in Malta, however one of the best processions comes out of the Zejtun Parish Church. In the procession statues representing episodes from the Passion of Jesus Christ are carried shoulder height and also a number of people dress as biblical figures and roman soldiers. A local band also takes part by marching through the procession playing Funeral Marches. The procession starts at about 5.00pm and takes about five hours. If you want to know more about these celebrations, go to the website I noted down below, it's a very interesting site and there are also many other photos. Leave a Comment Address: Zejtun Centre - MaltaDirections: Take the bus number 29 or 27 from Valletta. It takes about half an hour to arrive from Valletta, but I advise you to be there earlier to find a good place from where you can see.Website: http://www.belandband.com/Mainmenu.html

Spinola Bay - always a delight! by mazzap Possibly the most photographed view in Malta. It has changed very gradually over the years with the addition of restaurants and the 'new' Hilton Tower which now dominates the background (but NOT in my photo thanks!)- but the bay of Spinola is still a beautiful sight. A great place to stay too! Lively, scenic and with the best choice of restaurants and hotels on the island. My only personal criticism is of the relatively new 'LOVE monument' that has appeared right in the centre of the optimum viewpoint. Supposedly modern art - but why put it right there? Like the Hilton Tower, I have purposely not captured it in my photo. See it on my Malta Intro page instead. Leave a Comment Address: Spinola Bay, St JuliansDirections: At the foot of the hill

View of Valletta from the sea by mazzap Several boats all with similar cruises on offer are moored at Sliema seafront. No need to book - we went at a busy time, and you can even negotiate the price! We took a trip in a smallish boat, lasting 90 minutes and it was very good! The recorded tour information was perfectly adequate and there were toilets on board. A glass of wine was also included! The views of Valletta and the bastions from the sea were truly stunning. Leave a Comment Address: Sliema Ferry areaDirections: Lower Sliema
