Beach

by rcsparty

Most of the beaches we encountered in Malta were more rock then beach. Since we were there over Christmas, we were not looking to swim or sunbath, so we had a good time walking or climbing along the rocks.

Ricasoli Fort

by rcsparty

Fort Ricasoli occupies the eastern arm of the Grand Harbor, on a promotory known as Gallows Point. It was designed by Antonio Valperga, as part of the Knights of St John's fortification plans around the harbor. It is named for the knight who financed most of the fort. It continued to be an active military installation throughout the British period, and was the scene of a mutiny by Sicilian soldiers in 1807.

Hagar Qim

by rcsparty

The Hagar Qim complex is location on a hilltop overlooking the sea on the southern part of the island. It consists of 4 or 5 apses, with a forecourt and a facade. Unlike other Malta temples, this is a single temple, as opposed to a complex of a few. The structure dates back to around 3500 BC.

Blue Grotto

by rcsparty

The Blue Grotto is a natural arch of rock in the sea, near the village of Wied iz Zurrieq. It is a beautiful view from the cliffs above the arch. For a closer look, you can take a boat trip right up to the arch, but it is very dependent on the weather. The boats leave from Zuirreq between 9am and 4pm. It's best to go in the morning, before the crowds make the caves full of boats. When we went, the wind picked up and they stopped the boat tours fairly quickly.

St Paul Shipwreck Cathedral

by rcsparty

This church is definately worth visiting, even if the enterance is somewhat off the beaten path. It is on the same side of the street as the University of Malta. It was built in the 1500's to commemorate St Paul's shipwreck on the island. The altar piece depicting the shipwreck of St Paul was done by Paladini and is worth seeing. There is a reliquary that contains St Paul's wrist bone and a section of the marble column on which he was beheaded, which was donated by Pope Pius VII in 1818.

Lower Barracca

by rcsparty

Lower Barracca is located south of the city center in Valletta. There are some wonderful views of the grand harbor here, and it is a very peaceful place to take a break after walking the city. There is also a memorial to Sir Alexander Ball, who took Malta from the French around 1800.

Mdina Dungeon

by rcsparty

The dungeons are are unique place to visit, with wax figures in various states of torture. It might have been a little much for our younger daughter, but the older one was very interested. It was also interesting to try the props in front of the dungeon, although might have been more useful to keep the kids under control, then putting myself in it.

Tip Photo
Grand Harbor

by rcsparty

The Grand Harbor is a deep harbor, which is the most important port in Malta. It is guarded by the forts of St Elmo and St Angelo, and has protected Malta through the ages. The views across the harbor are stunning, especially along the walls of Valletta.

St Paul Cathedral-Mdina

by rcsparty

St Paul's Cathedral is located in side the main gate of Mdina. It was built around 1700, to replace an old cathedral, which was destroyed by an earthquake, and was designed by Lorenzo Gafa. It was the seat of the Archbishop of Malta until the construction of St John's in Valletta.

Tip Photo
Mdina Gate

by rcsparty

The Mdina gate was built in 1724, and is the only gate to enter the city. It is located in front of Howard Garden's and right after a bridge that spans the moat, which surrounded the town. The two lions on either side of the gate, bear the coat of arms of Grand Mast Vilhena.
