MDINA This fortressed city on...

by chrissyalex

MDINA This fortressed city on a hill was one time Malta's capital, until Valletta was built in the 1500's. It is called the 'Silent City' because of its small population, very few cars, and high, narrow streets. This city has fortifications that were built when Malta was under Arab rule in the 800's. Prior to this, there was a much smaller wall with twice as big of an area around it that was built by the Byzantines. The Arabs reduced the size of the city, built much higher and larger fortifications and added a moat so it would be easier to defend from enemies. In the 1600's ,there was a huge earthquake in Sicily. The effects of this earthquake was so tremedous that it detroyed half of Mdina, but the city was slowly rebuilt.

by chrissyalex

GHAR DALAM or 'The cave or darkness' This cave was one of the earliest sites used by Neolithic man who crossed to Malta from Sicily. When this cave was excavated in the 1800's,five different layers were discovered in the floor. In the lower layers, fossils of bones, tusks, and teeth were found that belonged to extinct species of animals. The most interesting animal remains that were found were of dwarf hippopotami and dwarf elephants. There are two theories as to why these animals were in the dwarf form. One is that the lack of food and water caused to species to adapt into a smaller form to survive. The other theory is that the dwarfism resulted from forced inbreeding. Remains of red deer, brown bears, wolves, foxes and gaint swans were also found. In the upper layers, tools and pottery were discovered. When you visit the cave, you first enter through the museum. In one of the rooms of this...

by chrissyalex

THE MOSTA DOME I visited many beautiful churches in Malta, and this one made the biggest impression for several reasons. First of all, it is the third largest dome in Europe.Secondly, it was very beautiful and the interior is painted light blue to honor the Blessed Mother (the patron saint of this church), it seemed to be much brighter inside than most of the other churches that I saw. An thirdly, this church has a very interesting story!Malta was heavily bombed in World War II and one day in 1942,three bombs hit this church while 300 people were inside attending Mass. Two of the bombs bounced off the church without exploding and the third bomb broke through the Dome and on to the church floor without detonating! Not one person was hurt! Also the damage to the church was very minimal and only took a few days to repair. Amazing story!!!

THE ROCKY BEACHES When people...

by chrissyalex

THE ROCKY BEACHES When people talk about the best beaches in Malta, they always mention the sandy beaches. The sandy ones are great, especially for a leisurely day at the beach, but the rocky beaches can be fun too and there were some walking distance from my hotel, which made it handy for a quick dip in the Med. The advantages to the rocky beaches were that you don't end up with sand everywhere( in your clothes, between your toes etc), and they really are for actual swimming. You don't ease into the water like the sandy beaches, you jump right in and the water is over your head.

by chrissyalex

GHAJN TUFFIEHA BEACH also called 'Apple's Eye' is a gorgeous beach. It is located about a 5 minute walk from Golden Bay beach and I really preferred it much more because it was less commercial. You have to walk down a large flight of stairs to get there. The sandy part of this beach is narrower than Golden Bay but the sand was cleaner and there were fewer people. The thing I loved most about this beach was the gorgeous setting. This beach is surrounded by cliffs and there are paths you can walk to get up to these cliffs for some stunning views. It really was beautiful.

by chrissyalex

GOLDEN BAY BEACH Is one of Malta's nice sandy beaches. It is next to another really nice beach,Ghajn Tuffieha, so you can check out both if you like. Golden Bay is busier and it seemed more commercial, but still it was nice. There is a restaurant with the internet, a hotel and all kinds of activities you can do such as parasailing, speed boat rides, banana boat rides etc. Something very popular that they were selling at the beach to eat were cups of fresh fruit salad which were very refreshing on a hot day. It is called 'Golden Bay' because of the color of the sand.

by chrissyalex

THE CATACOMBS Catacombs are underground burial chambers and in the city of Rabat, there are a few such as St. Paul's and St Agatha's. I visited the catacombs of St. Cataldus. You enter through a small chapel, then down to a small altar and then down some more stairs to the actual catacombs. Near the tombs, there was a table that I was told was used for celebrations after a burial because the dead had gone on to a better place.
