TARXIEN TEMPLES This temple complex is the largest of the neolithic temple complexes in Malta and the most recently built temples of this complex were constructed between 3000 and 2500 B.C. Evidence of fires in some of these temples suggest that some of these buildings were used as crematoriums. In one of the temples, there is an altar and near this altar, there is an area where flint knives an animal bones were found which proves that animal sacrifices took place here.

BLUE GROTTO Take a boat trip to see this beautiful group of caves. The largest cave is called the Blue Grotto. The water in these caves is a lovely shade of blue because of the algae that grow here. The best time to visit the Blue Grotto is in the morning, when the sunlight shining into the caves really highlights the color of the water.

Visit Valletta - Malta's capital. Extremely picturesque, lots of shopping and sightseeing, museums and history. Try having lunch at Da Pippo's on Melita Street (which crosses Republic Street about 4 blocks in from the main gate - there is a small sign on at the intersection of Melita and Republic for Trattoria da Pippo to guide you). Keep in mind there is no menu here, just pasta and whatever they are making that day. Go in and check out the day's specials behind the glass counter in the back.Explore Fort St. Elmo at the eastern edge of Valletta for 25 cents (local) for some history and great views. Just follow Republic street down the hill and you can't miss it.

Take a short trip to visit one of the island's megalithic temples which are among the oldest ancient structural remains on the planet. The oldest date from around 3600 BC. I don't have any pictures at the moment, but this website has some good info as well as several links to other sites.

The towns in Malta all have their own festa's celebrating the town's patron saint. They are a unique experience with parades (complete with a statue of the saint that is decorated and carried through the streets), music, food and fireworks. The fireworks go off day and night. This picture is of the fireworks during the St. Julian's festa, which takes place during the last week of August.

Take a trip to see Mdina, Malta's old capital (Valletta is the current capital). The city is referred to as 'the silent city' and its truly amazing. It is located on the western-center of the island, and it lies on the island's highest point, offering tremendous views all around. The streets are usually very quiet, and at night they have their own special charm - winding streets with quiet houses lining them, small sidestreets and stairways leading to unknown places, and interesting architecture. There is a hotel just inside the gates called the Xara Palace (pronounced 'Shara') with a restaurant on top called Du Mondion where you can sit on an outside terrace with a breathtaking view of eastern Malta. Its great at night, especially in summertime when you are likely to see fireworks shooting off from various town festa's.

War Musuem - this is underground and is underneath the main town. Gozo has some caves which are quite pretty. You have to get here by ferry. Some of the churches are quite pretty. There is a lot of exhibits in the Natural History Musuem. This has a lot of english information. Nearby is a roman house where they have excavated a mosiac dating from the roman occupation. There is a lot of war time heritage to Malta it was an important post for the allies. !!

Mosta As you enter Mosta you immediately recognise the Rotunda, the parish church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This church was built in the classical style in the middle of 19th century.Sandy beaches Are largely concentrated in the northwest of Malta. Among the most popular are Ghajn Tuffieha, Mellieha Bay, Golden Bay, Paradise Bay and Armier.Gozo The short trip from Malta to Gozo is in itself a pleasant experience especially on a fine day. Mgarr Harbour is picturesque with all kinds of seacraft. It has seen slaves and corsairs and pirates who have carried its population away. The neo-Gothic Lourdes Sanctuary, built in 1888, watches over it. In Victoria, the capital, go up to The Citadel or Gran Castello and walk around. Lanes, dwellings, alleys, bastions exude an aura of mystery and date from madieval times. The late medieval houses are unique in the Maltese Islands....

Mdina

Mdina is a really unique city. The ancient capital of Malta has been in existence as a fortified citadel since Arab times, hence its name. Few other cities can boast a history so long or an architectural merit so worthly. It is one of the few remaining medieval fortified cities in Europe
