Near the prehistoric site of Hagar Qim, south of the village of Zurrieq, is the famed Blue Grotto. Take the two sites in on one trip - both are worth it. At the Blue Grotto, you can take a small boat ride for a fairly small fee that will take you around the grotto itself as well as other caves on the coast. Beautiful.

by vilkas

Valletta is a must see. The narrow streets of downtown conceal numerous churches, museums and other places of interest:St John's Co-Cathedral is simply essential, one of the most impressive churches I have ever seen with stunning floor mosiacs (typical of other Maltese churches too) and baroque sculpture. The church also contains an art museum with some important pieces of art.Fort St. Elmo at the tip of Valletta is well worth a visit, particularly for anyone interested in military history. Take one of the guided tours, which are excellent. Also, be sure to see the 'In Guardia' parade on Sundays - a parade of sixteenth-century 'soldiers,' touristy of course but impressive nonetheless with cannon demonstrations. The War Museum and the Lascaris War Rooms, both also in Valletta, provide more of interest for military history enthusiasts; though neither is very large they contain some...

by vilkas

Gozo, the second island in Malta, is not nearly so densely populated but it contains a number of sites of interest, particularly in Victoria where the old citadel commands the surrounding countryside. The countryside itself is beautiful and if you can you should spend some time there, and walking around the coast. Everyone tells me that it's essential as well to take a ferry to the tiny, uninhabited island of Comino, where you can see the famed 'blue lagoon' - I didn't see it myself though.

by G_Butler

Go to Mdina the silent city. Very quiet and the highest point in the island, you can see for miles, even watch the planes landing at the faraway airport!A visit to Marsascala is ideal for a quiet day out, picturesque harbour. Go to Gozo too, Malta's smaller sister island and visit the ancient Gigantija temples.

by ciaramalone

The Blue Grotto is located near 'Wied iz-Zurrieq' south of the town of Zurrieq. The cliffs of the southern coast of Malta are very picturesque and offer some beautiful photo opportunities. The Blue Grotto is a natural rock formation which has been carved out of the rock by the relentless pounding of the sea. A number of caves can be reached by boat from Wied iz-Zurrieq, the main one being the Blue Grotto. This cave is quite deep. The sea in this area tends to be rough at times but the fishermen who ferry tourists and Maltese alike to visit the grottos are very experienced at handling the seawothy Maltese boats ('Dghajes'). During the tourist season boats are constantly plying the waters between Wied iz-Zurrieq and the Blue Grotto. Each boat holds a small number of people. Even when the water is a little choppy, the experience is not to be missed.

A visit to the 'Blue Grotto'...

by DellyM

A visit to the 'Blue Grotto' is on most people's things to see list. This is a popular tourist spot, I would recommend a visit here first thing in the morning because it does get very busy.Take a boat ride around the 'grotto'. The water is sooooo blue, and crystal clear. A very pretty site, and a lovely place to take a swim.

by DellyM

One of my favourite tourist sites was our morning spent at the 'Popeye Village'. This is the site which was built in 1979 for the film made in June 1980. When we were there there was no entrance fee, in fact me and hubby were the only two people there so we were free to really take it all in. I understand that this is now a major tourist attraction, with full facilities(toilets, cafe, entertainment for children etc.) but this was not the case back then. It's in a very pretty area, and it's unique as it's not every day that you are able to stroll around a film set!

Visit Rabat.

by margaretvn

Outside the walls of Mdina, on the flat plateau is the town of Rabat, which is so different to Mdina. This is a lively town with lots of bars and small restaurants and lots of souvenir shops. Rabat was built over the catacombs from the earlier Roman capital city of the island. These catacombs are the biggest attraction of Rabat. Between Rabat and Mdina there is the Roman Villa. It lies opposite the “Greek Gate” of Mdina. It is a mixture of excavated parts of the house and some bits of ceramic, mosaic, oil lamps, stage masks and a oil-press and such sort of things.
