Visit St Agatha Catacombs in...

by margaretvn

Visit St Agatha Catacombs in Rabat. These catacombs are really very interesting, they have very well preserved wall paintings from the Roman and early Christian times. Plus fresco’s dating from the middle ages which were restored in 1989. A stairway down takes you to the cave chapel. In the middle of the 3rd century St Agatha hid there from her oppressor who was a high ranking Roman from Catania. When she went back to Catania the rejected man had her breasts cut off and threw her in a dungeon where she died. In the chapel there are fresco’s from the 12th and 15th century. One fresco is of St Agatha with a plate with two stylised breasts on it. In side gangways are all sorts of graves and also a round plateau carved out of the rock bottom where the family could take a meal in remembrance of their deceased. Well at least some think that, others think that the smell of all the rotting dead...

Visit Mdina.

by margaretvn

This beautiful little city known as “the silent city” was built on a rock plateau, which gave the city protection against any attackers. The walls of the plateau are very steep and Mdina can be seen from far away. The city is car free and so very quiet almost like an open-air museum. It is made up mainly of churches and cathedrals and palaces that once belonged to the Maltese ruling classes. Many of the old palaces are now restaurants. It is lovely to just wander through the narrow streets and take your time looking at the buildings. The views of the surrounding countryside from the walls are fantastic. The St Peter and St Paul cathedral is beautiful, it was designed by a Maltese architect –Lorenzo Gafa. The cross next to the altar is said to have been carried by Godfried van Bouillon by the capture of Jeruzalem in 1099. The main gate into Mdina is richly decorated and includes statues...

Visit Mdina and Rabat.

by margaretvn

In 218 BC Malta came under Roman political control, originally part of the praetorship of Sicily. Tradition say that St. Paul was shipwrecked in Malta in AD 60 and began to convert the inhabitants. The Maltese have been Christians since that time. The Romans built their capital on the island around the area of Mdina and Rabat and called it Melita, but it was the Arabs that built the wall around Mdina. In 1422 King Alfonso V gave Mdina the title “Notabile” meaning knighted in remembrance of the city’s courage in resisting the attack of 18,000 Turks. In 1530, however, it was given to the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem (the Knights Hospitalers), a religious and military order of the Roman Catholic church. The Knights of St John in Mdina and stayed there for two years. They then moved the order to Birgu. Jean de La Valette, the Knights' grand master successfully withstood the...

Visit Victoria on Gozo.

by margaretvn

Victoria is the capital of Gozo and the city got its name from Queen Victoria. The city is in the middle of the island and at the foot of the 140 metre high table mountain. This table mountain has been settled since the Stone Age because the plateau is easy to defend. The citadel was built in the middle ages but destroyed by the Turks in 1551. It was rebuilt by the Knights in the 16th century, today much of the courtyards within the walls have been made into gardens but some buildings remain and some are museums. There is also a cathedral dating from 1716 designed by Lorenzo Gafa.

Visit Dwejra Lake on Gozo.

by margaretvn

This lake (also known as the inland sea) is only separated from the sea by a high small cliff edge. There is a natural opening in the cliff, which connects the sea to the lake. In the sea are two natural phenomena’s to be seen. One is the Azure Window which is a portal in the rocky coast and the other is the Fungus Island, which is an uninhabited island 35 meter from the coast. In 1651 the Knights of St John built a watchtower here to protect the island. It was very important to them because on it grew a fungus which they used to stop bleeding and for other medicinal purposes.

Visit Gozo.

by margaretvn

A little island of 67 square kilometres north of Malta, it is so different to the bigger island and is well worth exploring. Tourism is very important to the island and every day people come in bus loads from Malta!! You can go from Malta to Gozo by helicopter but most people come with the ferry – the crossing takes 30 minutes. Xlendi is a small holiday centre on the south coast of Gozo. It lies in a S-shaped bay with high rocky coast. The only blemish in the surroundings are the many apartments blocks on the edge of the village – but the old village centre is pleasant.

Visit Marsaskala and...

by margaretvn

Visit Marsaskala and Marsaxlokk.Theses are two beautiful and very photogenic villages on the south coast of Malta. In the summer months, weekends and especially in the evenings it can get very busy there. Marsaskala is a long stretched out place with one large hotel. The houses are along the shore line, which is a sheltered haven with brightly coloured fishing boats which just asked to be photographed! The town stretches out as far as St Thomas Bay with its bathing opportunities, buses go from the centre to the bay. Along the bay there are numerous little restaurants where you can sit outside in the sunshine and eat delicious freshly cut seafood. A few kilometres from St Thomas Bay is Marsaxlokk, a little town on a sheltered bay. It was here that the Turks landed in 1565. It is picturesque and along the boulevard there is a daily market. The only awful thing about the whole scene is the...

Visit The Temples of Hagar Qim...

by margaretvn

Visit The Temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra.First a little history - The earliest archaeological remains date from about 3800 BC. Neolithic farmers lived in caves like those at Dalam (near Birzebbuga) or villages like Skorba (near Nadur Tower). Around 2400 BC an elaborate cult of the dead of Stone Age or Copper Age culture evolved, it originally centred around rock-cut collective tombs such as those Hagar Qim (near Zurrieq) These temples date from the Stone Age and are unique in Europe. They lie lonely and mysteriously on the coast. If you only visit one temple while on Malta then Hagar Qim should be the one you go to. The temple was built in two phases – about 3500 and 2800 BC and the original design is still very easily seen. The temple is made up of two rows of standing stones. On both sides of the main entrance there are two rows of horizontal stones, which rest on smaller vertical...

Visit St Pauls Catacombs in...

by margaretvn

Visit St Pauls Catacombs in Rabat. This is the biggest underground burial site in Rabat and it is a maze of halls and gangways with graves dug in the walls and in the floor. It was here that the “ordinary people” were buried. The higher class people buried their dead in carved out rock blocks with decorated tops.

by cami2

Since Malta i so small you can see the whole Malta by bus wich are as I mentioned before extremly cheap and very oldfasioned in about 2-3 days.Must see the capital Valetta and Mdina, the quiet city. And it's quiet alright. The dungeons in Mdina, intresting. The Valetta has one big comercial street in the centre therre you can find all the shops, reaturants and so on, but don't forget to walk the smaller perpendicular streets too. It's a nice city, not breathtaking like other cities.
