However, Malta is definetley NOT, just sun and wonderful sea. If you are interested in historical remains, you must visit some of the prehistoric temples, dating back up to seven thousand years ago, much older than the pyramids and more magnificent than Stonehenge in Britain. This photo is an aerial view of the remains of the prehistoric temples at Haqar Qim<bgsound src='<bgsound src='http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2234/r-c-no01.mid'

Malta being such a small island, you are never far away from the sea. Depending on your inclination and courage, you can take a dip in what we locals consider cold sea in late April when the water temperature is about 18C, or wait till July as most of us do when the sea is warmer through to October and up to early December when the sea is still warm enough and good for a swim given good weather. There are numerous fine swimming spots. Some prefer sandy beaches as the one in the picture - the popular Mellieha Bay, one of many sandy beaches.

Others prefer a more picturesque setting such as Xlendi Bay at Gozo, the smaller of the two islands which is easily accessable by ferry-boat.<a href='http://www.aboutmalta.com' http://www.aboutmalta.com

by paul002

In this cathedral, apart from numerous paintings by Preti, and the fine sculpture and monuments in marble, you can admire Carravaggio's masterpiece; the beheading of St John. It is the only signed painting by Caravaggio and his largest canvas. (not seen in this photo)

There are few other countries where there are so many fine churches per square mile. Almost all churches are worth a visit. but please do remember that a church is a place of worship and the tourist must respect this One of the finest churches is the one at Mosta known as the Mosta dome because of the its very large dome, one of the largesat in the world.

No visitor should come to Malta without seeing Mdina - the silent city that was built by the Arabs around the year 800A.D. but which was later almost rebuilt by the Knights of Malta in the 16th century. the oldest building, shown in this photo is the Norman House dating back to the times of the Normans in around 1100A.D.A visit to Mdina late in the evening is a must. Try to go to for a romantic dinner in one of the good restaurants there (Medina, Bacchus or xara palace)
