It is a very popular tourist attraction in the walled city of Mdina which is also known as the silent city. The religious museum is located inside the lovely baroque style palace as depicted in our photograph on the right. The Cathedral Museum displays among other things such as coins, artifacts, prints, documents, paintings, woodcuts and religious vestments. Among the popular exhibits and attractions are woodcuts by Durer and engravings by Rembrandt. Opening hours are between 9.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. St. Paul's Cathedral, Mdina

by hopang

St. Paul's Cathedral is located inside the main gate of Mdina on the island of Malta. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral constructed in the late 17th century to replace an old cathedral destroyed by an earthquake earlier. St. Paul's Cathedral was designed by Lorenzo Gafa. It has a lovely facade with Maltese Baroque style of architecture. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Mdina. Don't miss St. Paul's Cathedral when you visit Mdina on your vacation!

Dwejra

by pure1942

Some of Gozo’s best coastal scenery is to be enjoyed at Dwejra near the quaint village of St. Lawrence. Beside’s having one of Malta’s best snady beaches, Dwejra is the site of one of Malta’s most impressive rock formations. The Azure Window is a famous symbol of Malta and Gozo, where the sea has cut through a narrow headland leaving a huge window. You can stand opposite the window and look directly through it along the western coast. Also at Dwejra point is the oddly named crocodile rock which sticks up out of the sea and another strange rock formation known as the Blue Hole. This is located on the rocky plateau in front of the Azure Window. The Blue Hole is a vertical hole which drops 10 metres down into the rock and connects to the sea which flows beneath.

Ta' Cenc Cliffs

by pure1942

Ta’ Cenc leaves Dingli Cliffs in Malta standing. The cliffs are breathtaking and an enjoyable walk along the cliff tops from Xlendi to Sannat and Ta’ Cenc village is a highlight of a trip to Gozo. The white cliffs rise in a sheer wall over 130 metres high from the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and really are a beautiful sight. Reaching Ta’ Cenc village keep an eye out for more evidence of Malta’s prehistoric past with a small dolmen and mysterious ‘cart ruts’ located close-by. Be careful walking along the cliffs. There is no guard rails and the sheer drops fall away from the pathway, when a pathway is even present. If you are walking to or from Xlendi, you need to cross open fields and along the rough cliff tops where a proper path is not present.

Gozo - Xlendi

by pure1942

Xlendi is a popular place for visitors staying on Gozo and has a variety of accommodation, bars and restaurants. It looks like it was once a peaceful and quaint fishing village but development has stolen a little of its charm. Its location is still very pituresque, sitting at the head of a small natural harbour cutting through sea cliffs with turquoise water and a small sandy beach. A small 17th century watch tower (Torri ta’ Xlendi) guards the entry to the bay and you can reach it by south from the town and across the cliff tops.

Gozo - Victoria – Il-Kastell

by pure1942

Il-Kastell is the walled old town of Victoria, surrounded by ramparts and sitting on a hill above the town. The old town, although crumbling and under reconstruction in parts is a nice place for a stroll and the 360o views from the ramparts take in the entire island of Gozo and the unusual plateau hills dotting the landscape. The Cathedal of the Assumption is the most significant building of Il-Kastell, but was under restoration when we visited so was covered in scaffolding. The Cathedral was built between 1697 and 1711 in place of an earlier church which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693.There is also a Cathedral Museum behind the Cathedral itself but we didn’t go in. There are several other small museums and craft shops dotted around the Citadel.

Gozo

by pure1942

Gozo was the highlight of our trip to Malta. Our only regret was not going sooner because we only went to Gozo on the final day of our trip and would definitely have either returned or stayed a night if we had gone sooner or had more time.Gozo is infinitely more relaxed and laid-back than neighbouring Malta and gives a real insight and impression into what Maltese life was like in the past. From the peaceful main town of Victoria (Rabat) to the stunning coastal scenery at Ta’ Cenc and Dwejra all coupled with friendly locals, Gozo is one of the country’s best assets. Gozo also possesses a slice of the country’s famous megalithic past with the ancient temples at Xaghra among the country’s best.

Comino

by pure1942

Besides the uninhabited island of Filfla and various rocky crops of land jutting out of the sea, Comino is the smallest of Malta’s islands. The tiny island sits between Malta and Gozo and is an automobile free island. Few people live permanently on the island, but during the summer season a hotel is open for guests on the island. The island is a designated nature reserve and there a few other buildings on the island beside the hotel and adjacent bungalows. The only other buildings of note are St. Mary’s Watchtower and Chapel of Our Lady’s Return from Egypt. The main draw for visitors to the island is the over-crowded but beautiful Blue Lagoon. However, iot is worth taking a stroll along the short coastline, to soak up the stunning coastal scenery, rock formations and sea caves. Away from the Blue Lagoon area, the island is much quieter and you can easily find a little piece of paradise...

Comino - Blue Lagoon

by pure1942

The Blue Lagoon is a stunningly beautiful little cove, but the crowds of vistors really do mean it’s a hard place to get some peace and quiet to fully enjoy it. We visited in early May and there were a huge number of visitors, so I can only presume that during the summer, the crowds must be crammed around the Lagoon. I can’t really complain about the crowds...we were part of it, but what I really can’t agree with is the amount of pleasure craft allowed into the Lagoon. There is meant to be a roped off area for swimming but I couldn’t see any and jet-skis and boats just pulled up at the small sandy areas. This is really annoying as they take up all the space on the beach which isn’t exactly spacious anyway. Besides this annoyance, the Lagoon is really a beautiful little bay with turquoise water and white sandy, sea –floor. Little Cominotto forms the outer part of the Lagoon and you can...
