THE BLUE LAGOON

by jayhawk2000

THE BLUE LAGOON is an undeniably beautiful spot off the coast of Comino, the smallest inhabited Maltese island, and in view of the cliffs of Gozo. This is probably the most popular day trip in the country and by midday the cove is jam-packed with excursion crafts, jet skis and speedboats. We visited aboard a Captain Morgan cruise and spent about four hours here lazing in the sun. We'd also booked lunch aboard the boat, which was a decent selection of cold cuts, salads, pasta and wine. More details about Captain Morgan cruises can be found under my Transportation tips for Malta. While at the Blue Lagoon you can sunbathe, swim, cool off with an ice cream and maybe pay extra for a visit by speedboat to the caves dotted around Comino's coastline. The lagoon's remarkably clear water was a bit chilly at the end of April but this didn't stop the German ladies from stripping off their bikinis and...

Car parks!

by Dick33

We drove to the Craft village near Mdina a Maltese man waved us into an empty car park then said "you pay me now." I asked how much thinking he was a car park attendant he said " how much you think," I gave him 50 cents. The exact same thing happened at Gnejna Bay beach again I didn't want a confrontation with anyone Maltese so I gave him 50 cents, going back to the car a Maltese man had parked refused to pay.So these men are not car park attendants and as I thought you don't have to give them money if you don't want to I still would, it was only 50 cents and I didn't want any bother with enyone Maltese. Don't pay if you don't want to!

Hired Cars - Target for Traffic Wardens

by tophat30

If you're hiring a car take care where you park, especially in Tourist zones. As the traffic wardens have a quota for a number of tickets daily, the hottest target for them are rented cars as they know that tourists can't justify their inncocence. Rented cars are recognized in Malta as the numberplate is always **K-***. Tickets are immediatly reported to the garage owners and in most cases you can't get away with it ... innocent or not. Certain places such as Sliema and Rabat Gozo are 1 hr time zone. Better play it safe and display your' parking time meter' wherever you park. These carton time cards can be obtained from the garage you're hiring your car from. Beware of the men/bi/women in green. If you're on Holiday....... they're not !!!

Karozzin - The Horse Drawn Cab

by tophat30

Always negotiate the price before you ride the cab. The average fee is Lm7 irrilevant of the number of party. Ask for the journey time as well, and try to find a 'friendly' cab driver. Some of the drivers will give you a decent description about your tour and others doesn't even know a word in english except the service price *of course*. These cabs are common in most touristic places in Malta such as Mdina, Valletta, Sliema and St Julians. Personally I don't see anything exciting about riding this cab. Just take a pic and move on. Most of the horses are mistreated and old. They stay for long hours under extreme sunshine and hot temperatures. The cab in itself is not comfortable and most of them need a full refurbishment. Some of the seats are covered in plastic which makes the journey more uncomforatble in hot and sweaty days.

Special (Expensive) tourist prices!

by oRi_5

Unfortunately some restaurant/bar owners tend to take advantage of tourists by raising prices on food and drinks. This tends to be done mostly in Gozo (it is even done to Maltese people sometimes - Gozitans are very patriotic!). In some cases they even have different menus to show, depending whether you are local or foreign. Not really much you can do to avoid this except maybe try pick up a few Maltese expressions like please and thank you or try and check prices which are written down somewhere so you won't get fooled!

Karrozzin

by mrpastry

The Karrozzin is a lovely ride and very romantic at night but be careful they are expensive, you will be quoted as much as ML15-00 but if you bargain you will get it for about half of this don't pay more. the first time I rode in one it cost me five bob. There is no alternative if you want to ride bargain.

Ta'Qali Crafts Village

by Bilimari

This is a crafts village outside Mdina, selling Maltese lace, glass works, pottery, leathers, etc., and is the largest crafts centre on the islands, with 20+ companies located in former WWII airport hangers. Many shops have demonstrations, and watching the glass blowing was interesting. (See photo.) Of course, after the demonstration, you have to go through the gift shop to go outside the building. (It is a trap!)Open: Mon-Fri, 8am-4pmBy bus: lm50 o/w from St. Sullian's There is more crafts center on the islands, including the one in Valletta called The Malta Government Crafts Centre. However, I heard that they do NOT sell the products there.

Rental Umbrellas and Chairs

by Kushelkitten

I will say that the Blue Lagoon in Comino is a must see. Just beware the beach area is very small and therefore crowded. You will notice that some smart Maltese person had the idea to rent deck chairs and sun umbrellas. When you hear the prices it doenst sound like a lot, I beleive it was 1.50 Mtl for a chair and 2 mtl for an umbrella but for the 3.50 you could buy dinner someplace. When I went May 2005 3,50=€8,.16 Just seemed awfully steep for 2-3 hours. You could bring your own umbrella and try squeeze onto the beach. Probably wont be able to get your umbrella to stand because you can feel the rock below the sand layer. However, many of the boat tours allow the guests to stay on board and sun and will rent you a deck chair for about 1mtl. No umbrella but you can get out of the sun by going below deck.

Taxis

by Taffster

Generally no problems but on our first day we got in a taxi and were charged some huge amount to go about 3 mins down the road. It was only when we worked out the currency that we realised we had been had :oD Wise yourself up and negotiate a rate before you get in! Take a Malta Bus :oP

St Paul's Bay

by Taffster

This is an absolutely stunning location but watch out! Last time i went to Malta I stayed here and although St Paul's is gorgeous, it is really expensive. There are only a couple of restaurants here and they serve up some lovely food but if you take yourself to the next town in either direction, Buggiba or Melliah, the prices drop by a great deal. Lovely place to stay if you have the option of getting out of the bay to eat/drink once in a while. Visit here by all means as restaurants are worth a visit, but be aware that this is more pricey than other areas.Personally, i think its worth it for the stunning view of the ocean and clear skyline from inside a deep bend which makes St Paul's Bay.
