Malta International Airport

by hopang

Malta International Airport is located at Luqa approximately ten kilometers from the city of Valletta. It is the only international airport in the Republic of Malta. The history of the airport dates back to 1958 when the airport for civil aviation was first constructed. It has only one passenger terminal building with two aircraft runways. The international airport handles approximately three millions passengers per year, most of them of course local and foreign tourists. Central Bus Station, Valletta

by hopang

The Central Bus Station is located just outside the City Gate in the city of Valletta. There are buses travelling to almost every parts of the island of Malta originated from the central bus station. We understand that there are more than 60 bus routes stopping at or originating from the central bus station. Nevertheless most of the buses in Malta are old-fashioned buses. They are in a way lovely tourist attractions like the old London buses in the city of London. A lovely Triton Fountain (depicted in our hidden photograph) designed by Vincent Apap is located in the center of the bus station. It was erected in 1959.

Harbour Cruise, Sliema

by hopang

Traditional or historic harbour cruises are popular tourist attractions on the island of Malta. There are many cruise operators to choose from and the main ones are Alliance Cruises, Captain Morgan, and Luzzu Cruises with some of them offering Underwater Safari as well. Of course each one has a different route from the other. Please enquire the route that you intend to take before you pay for your boat tour. Most boat tour will pass the Grand Harbour and most cruises originate from the Sliema Ferry Jetty. Alliance Cruises also offers cruise round the Malta island which is a full day cruise including meals onboard. You may e-mail to the following address for more information regarding Alliance Cruises:- info@alliancecruises.com

Horse Carriage in Malta

by hopang

Horse drawn carriages are excellent means of transportation to see the various tourist attractions in the island of Malta especially in Mdina and Valletta. Most of the pasengers are local and foreign tourists. Transportation by horse carriages definitely costs more than other means of transportation available in Malta such as ferry services, taxis and buses.

Sliema-Valletta Ferry

by pure1942

The small Sliema passenger ferry, plies the route across Marsamxett Harbour between Valletta and Sliema. It seems a bit strange that there is a need for this service between the two cities with such an efficient bus service, but it can be convienient if staying in Sliema or Valletta as it is a bit quicker than the bus and you are trated to a great views as you cross. The ferry leaves in the hour from Valletta across to Sliema and if you are nearby at the right time, is more convenient than walking to the bus terminus. A single crossing costs €1.40

getting around Gozo

by pure1942

As I mentioned, it is not as easy to get around Gozo using public transport as it is on Malta. This means you would be better off hiring a car or bicycle or walking. You can circumnavigate Gozo on foot in under three hours and is a great way to see the countryside. We walked a good bit in Gozo but as we had only a day to see what we wanted to see, we hitch-hiked from place to place too. Not one car passed us on the road without picking us up when we were hitching and the locals here came across as far more friendly then their neighbours on Malta. I’m not advising you to hitch-hike but we had no problems at all and met several very friendly and interesting locals by hitching a lift from them.

Comino Ferry

by pure1942

There are a number of small ferry boats which take visitors to Comino from Malta and Gozo. We took the Royal C boat which cost €10 return and included a short tour around the sea caves of Comino but you may be able to get it cheaper elsewhere. This ferry doesn’t run from the same point as the main Gozo ferry but leaves from a small harbour outside a large hotel about 1km east of the main ferry terminal. You can get off the bus before reaching the main ferry terminal. Watch out for a the sign for Comino Ferry and get off the bus then. You can also catch a boat to comino from Gozo at Mgarr.

Gozo Ferry

by pure1942

Gozo Channel Line operates a regular ferry service between Malta and Gozo and vice-versa. The ferry operates from Cirkewwa on Malta and Mgarr on Gozo. The efficient serviced uses two ro-ro ferries which operates all day (approx every 45 mins) and even through the night in season. The price for a return foot passenger is a very reasonable €4.50 which cannot be said for their on board cafeteria!

Gozo Buses

by pure1942

Gozo’s bus system doesn’t work as well as Malta’s. The buses (which are grey and red as opposed to the yellow and orange Malta buses) don’t run frequently and can only be relied on in the mornings. Most of the population of Gozo have cars so they don’t rely heavily on the public transport. We found ourselves better off walking or hitching a ride with the ever friendly locals, rather than wasting time waiting for buses which may or may not come :)The only reliably frequent bus on Gozo seems to be the 25 which runs between the Ferry Harbour at Mgarr and Victoria and meets the ferries from Malta. The bus ride costs 47c and takes you to the bus bay in Victoria.
