Valletta Bus Terminal

by pure1942

The main connection point for buses around Malta is directly outside Valletta Main Gate. The chaotic looking bus terminal centres around the Triton Fountain and you can reach most destinations in Malta from here. Although it appears chaotic and haphazard the system works well and you don’t ever have to wait long for a bus to your destination. Blue signs along the bays display the route numbers and route maps and route guide are widely available from tourist offices and bus kiosks around the terminal and some of the buses. Grab one in the airport tourist office and it will detail all the routes and time info you will need. The cost of a bus ride varies depending on destination but is very reasonable. Most destinations cost just 47c and the longest and therefore most expensive destinations won’t cost more than €1.16. You pay the driver when getting on the bus, preferably with exact change...

Gozo Channel Line

by hopang

Crossing between the island of Gozo and the main island of Malta is made easy by the efficient Gozo Channel Line between Mgarr and Cirkewwa. The fare is cheap. It costs only 4.00 euros for a return trip. The service is up to our expectations. The crossing itself is a lot of fun with spectacular view of the islands especially the picturesque Comino Island! Gozo Channel Line was established in 1979. You may also e-mail to the following address for more information regarding the Gozo Channel Line:- admin@gozochannel.com

Airport to Town by Taxi

by wls3

Taxi service in Malta is a pure rip off. Drivers ask/get a small fortune for even short rides. Best bet is to use buses as much as possible. Book taxis with your hotel when you absolutely must have one and make sure that the price is agreed before you drive off. When you find a driver you like ask for his visit card so you can redial him yourself.Best way to get from airport to St J is to book/pay a taxi with the official service kiosk INSIDE the terminal. You pay there and get a slip which you then give to driver outside.

Getting around Malta

by KoalaB

Using the local public buses is a great and way to get around Malta. They are cheap and can take you to most of the places you would want to see. I'm pleased to report that last time I was there they were gradually replacing a lot of the old rattle trap buses with new ones! However we could not work out why the drivers would not turn on the air conditioning when it was a really hot day and these new buses had windows that did not open. Then the driver would wonder why he was forever shouting (they do that a lot!) for people to move to the back of the bus! When it's a hot day/evening and you're packed in like sardines we just wanted to get out because it was becoming really stifling. Hopefully things have changed since I was there in 2004.

Wicked yellow/orange buses of Malta

by omehes

The best way to get known Malta and Gozo (apart from renting a mini car) is by their typical yellow buses. They run all the time and almost everywhere. It's a great experience to travel with the locals, being tossed around on the hard sits while the driver is negotiating the winding narrow roads and streets. And yes, they come in all sizes, shapes and ages.

An old-fashioned bus at Gozo island

by hopang

The buses in Gozo are really old-fashioned as a matter of fact but they are truly tourist attraction by themselves. The ride may not be comfortable and the bus is not air-conditioned. It can be very hot during the hot summer months especially in August.

Car or bus

by littlebush

Hiring a car is a very good way to see the island and its very very cheap.I used 'Ray Bezzina car hire' located in Bugibba, just a minutes walk from the Falcon court apartments. (Call +356 21577165It cost just 10 euros per day.Having a car means you can explore and your own pace and see every inch of the island.Be warned, some roads have pot holes and are quite bumpy.People say Maltese drivers are crazy drivers but i found it ok.The roads can get busy, expecially coming back from Gozo heading south on a late sunday afternoon!Buses are legendary in Malta for their design! They run pretty much everywhere. To get to Gozo, the ferry funs every 45mins and takes 25mins.For 2 people with a car, it cost 20 euros for a return.

The Buses

by Ian831

Make the most of travelling around the islands by the buses, They offer so much of an experience and are a great way to meet and speak with the locals. the buses also allow you to see the sights instead of cramped in a car. Cheap and with the terminus in Valleta nowhere is really too far away to visit.

Malta Bus Routes

by joanj

When in Malta it is best to use the transportation service, and do not bother with the hire car. Roads not too special outside of built up areas and the price of the bus is very inexpensive and are very frequent. When you get to Valletta bus terminus, go to the information booth and pick up a Malta Bus Routes leaflet which gives the numbers and destinations. Please note they DO NOT give the destination on the bus only a number of the route. You can also buy, 1 / 3/5/7 day tickets from ticket booths or the bus driver. Valid from 0.5.30 - 23.00 and covers all zones. The leaflet will tell you the up to date prices of the tickets.Be aware the drivers do not always give you the odd change!!!I have posted a picture of an old bus on one of my pages, but you will be pleased to note there are many new buses also.

Getting Around

by franvall

Although buses are cheap, the service is far from good. Some are really old and clunky, and some of the drivers aren't that easy to communicate with.Best way to get around is to hire a car, no doubt about it. Driving is on the right (like the UK and Japan). The main roads are OK, well surfaced (mostly anyway!) and well signposted. Don't worry about getting lost, the island is small and the locals are very helpful, just stop and ask the way.
