Sliema-Valletta Ferry

by iwys

The Marsamxetto ferry runs between Sliema and Valletta approximately every half hour. The first ferry is at 8am and the last at 6pm. The ferries depart Sliema on the hour and half past the hour, and go from Valletta at quarter past and quarter to the hour. It is a very pleasant little trip and only takes 5 minutes so it is a lot faster than the bus. There is quite a steep climb up from the ferry terminal to the centre of Valletta, so it is better to take the ferry to Sliema, where the ferry terminal is conveniently placed on the waterfront near all of the hotels, shops and restaurants. The fare is €0.97 one way compared to €0.47 by bus, but it is a lot quicker and much more fun than the bus.

Gozo Ferry

by iwys

A trip on the Gozo ferry is one of the highlights of any trip to Malta. The views of Gozo and Comino, including a glimpse of the Blue Lagoon, are beautiful. To get to the ferry terminal at Cirkewwa, take bus nos. 45 and 145 from Valletta, 645 from Sliema and 48 from Bugibba. On Gozo, take bus no. 25 from Victoria to the ferry port at Mgarr. Buses wait to meet the ferry. There are ferries approximately every 45 minutes from 6am to 8pm and every two hours overnight. The ferry journey takes just 25 minutes. For the precise current timetable see the Gozo Channel website. The return ferry fare is €4.65per passenger and €15.75 for a car and driver.

Car rental and driving in Malta

by SophieTango

Renting is cheap, uncomplicated and allows you to discover remote parts of the island. Many car rental companies will happily deliver the vehicle to your hotel and let you drop it off at the airport (for €10 more). Prices are cheap and include unlimited mileage. There are gas stations about everywhere including at the roundabout outside the airport. The roads are ok to very bad, but everyone drives slowly. Maps are provided by the car rental company, you can also buy your own. Road signage is occasional and generally poor even around touristic sites, I went by gut feeling and a naturally good sense of direction.Renting a car is useful if you want to see places such as Dingli cliffs, Blue Grotto and the Hagar Qim temple, or if you want to see many sites in a short period of times as buses are slow, run about every 30 minutes or so and most only go from a city to Valletta. What I did was...

Malta buses

by englishtourist

Great way to see the island. Grab a timetable/destination map from the valletta or sliema bus areas. Buy a day pass for just over 3 euros from the driver on the bus.Ask him to let you know when you are at your required destination.Visit the sight then jump on another bus...much better value than the tourist bus (13 euros per day). Many of the buses have been lovingly restored and/or customised, many are given names & the drivers all have nicnames. There are some new buses with tinted windows (that make the sky look overcast) but I preferred the old classic ones.

Avis car hire

by Dick33

We booked an Avis car on the internet befor we went to Malta because we wanted to be sure to have a car on New years eve to go to Valletta. Our booking said the same as my photo of the door they closed at 18-30 and we should pick the car up at 17-30.We got there at 17-30 only to find the office in the Hilton locked up the gentleman at the desk said she came back at 16-30 to check for messages and left. On the 2nd of Jan she told us she knew we would be there at 17-30 but she had a party to go to, she then said why didn't we ring the head office and pick a car up off the security man, we did call and he told us he couldn't help us she then said why didn't we ring the airport and go get a car from there we did ring the airport but like the security man told us they will have gone even though it should be maned 24 hours a day he was right they had gone. Only after all this did she say you...

Car hire

by micajo

You can rent a car on the island. However, unless you are used to driving on the left side of the road and can handle unpredictable driving, you would be better off with a taxi or bus. A good map is a must. The best way to see around is to rent a car, but beware that even if you have a good map, you will get lost for sure, cause the road signs are not good at all. Either there are not enough signs or even they show signs, out of a sudden on the turns they do not put the major palaces names at all. It is very annoying even for locals. Petrol, as almost everywhere, will seem expensive. It is always best to pre book your car rental online as this works out a lot cheaper than booking when you arrive. According to the mediterranean markets, malta has very low rates for car rental. Any driver and additional drivers must take with them their driving licenses in order to be covered for by the...

BUSES

by hydronetta

Buses in Malta are cheap (around 0.5 euro), they have an extensive network but you should always stick to the time table as not all destinations are covered with the same frequency.Buses are very convenient if you have Valetta as your starting point (they have a terminal station there as well as one in Sliema). Note also that many routes stop running in the evening. The buses on popular routes can be crowded and their condition ranges from old fashioned charming ones (in bright colors) to modern chinese (but with seats designed for chinese height...)Luckily the distances are not big so you won't waste a lot of time travelling around

TAXIS

by hydronetta

You won't see a lot of taxis around the island. In fact we saw only a few parked just outside the Valetta city gate. As we were told taxis are very expensive and you should give a second thought before flagging one down. Don't even consider hiring one for a whole day if you want to sightsee around the island...

Public transport vs. renting a car

by maltesegrl

Public transportpros > cheapcons > inefficient. Even though most old buses are being replaced, the system is still very slow. Some of the bus drivers can be very rude. Services late at night are very limited.Renting a carpros > much faster than public transport + you would be able to explore the countryside better, since there are very few bus routes in this area.cons > expensive, left hand driving, Maltese drivers are known to be savage drivers (not as much as the italians, in my opinion), parking is very difficult to find in the larger cities/village centres.Overall, in my opinion...public transport is good enough to get you to the usual tourist/heritage attractions.

Airmalta is it the worst airline in the World?

by Dick33

I booked to fly to Malta on Boxing day and to return on the 2nd of January. Air malta took off that plane and offered me the 5th to return now because I wanted to come home on the 2nd I paid a lot of money the flight on the 5th was £200.00 cheeper but I got no refund so I found a flight on the 4th and this would be better for me but I was told I would have to be upgraded to club class and Airmalta has a policy not to upgrade people I explained the club class ticket was still almost £50.00 cheeper than what I had already paid and they said it doesn't matter the policy was no upgrades and that flight was not going to be offered to me.Beware readers Airmalta even when at fault will do nothing to help because as I have been told it is the policy, customer service must mean very little to them I am so disapointed I have flown with airmalta a lot of times and they have realy screwed me over...
