    Bighi Hospital Kalkara Point
    by sandysmith
At the end of Kalkara at Kalkara Point can be seen the old royal naval hospital - Bighi Hospital - on the promontory that juts into the Grand Harbour between Rinella Bay and Kalkara Creek. During the war hospital ships would dock alongside and wounded patients would be transferred to the wards by the lift shaft seen in the picture.

From Vittoriosa there is a fine view across to Kalkara - not one of the three cities but it looked an interesting place to see, perhaps on another visit.
Looks to have a lovely waterfront too with its two creeks that develop out in the Grand Harbour of Malta. - known as Rinella Bay and Kalkara Creek.

Kalkara is at the head of the creek on the opposite side of Vittoriosa (Kalkara Creek). As well as it's church, waterside location and marina it is also the home of Fort Rinella, yet another Maltese Fort. This one is supposedly one of the best to visit and has the 100 Ton Armstrong Gun, which was the largest gun in the world at the time it was built.
This is somewhere for us to visit next time we are in Malta.

Down by the sea near the Regatta Club just before you reach the bastions of Vittoriosa,if you look on your left, you can see the site were part of Spielberg's Munich was shot. Remember the part when the 'commandos' entered at night on the boats and raided the buildings? It's right in front of you !!

Built in 1675 to seal off the fortifications surrounding the Cottonera area. A Splendid example of a fortifaction entrance for it's architecture. This Gate could be seen as you enter Vittoriosa from Zabbar.

If you're a person like me that every now and then, have to stop for a five minute rest, take off your shoes, light a cigarette, drink some water and look at the map: I suggest this spot for a magnificent view of the port. Walk all the main street, passing the City Square and keep on walking straight for another two minutes up 'La Valette Street'. Once you reach the terrace, see the view, relief your breath, say ' aaah' and sit down. Beneath you, starting clockwise from your left, you'll see the Valletta Bastions, The Valletta Breakwater, Ricasoli Breakwater, The Bastions of Kalkara, and Kalkara Creek. If you're luckier you can see one of the enormous cruise ships entering the port . Click on pic to see more photos.

I came upon this purely by chance.....it is not mentioned in my guidebook, or anything else I read.

According to the sign placed on the building by the local council, this was the house of the executioner during the times 'of the Order and the Inquisition'.

High up above the first-floor window is his symbol of two axes, presumably the original.

No access to the building, and no more detailed information that I can find, sorry.

On Trig Pacifiku Skikluna, which is one of the narrow streets and alleyways in 'Il Collachio'. I can't remember exactly how I found it, but just wander around like I did. It's a very small area, and very interesting to explore anyway.

This Palace in Old Bishop's Palace Street was built by Bishop Cubelles in 1542 and enlarged in 1620 by the last Bishop that had his seat in Vittoriosa before moving to Valletta. Unfortunately the Palace was left to delapitate and there's not much to see, though the street is one of the best decorated in all Vittoriosa. Most of the houses in the neighbourhood are decorated with plants and flowers. This street can be found by walking the side street corner with the Inquisiter's Palace. Click pic to see photos of this street.
