The roads in Malta are in a...

by aldo007

The roads in Malta are in a very poor state. Potholes, cracked, bumpy - you name it. As if it's not enough, the Maltese drive like crazy, i.e. overtaking around bends and blind heights. The roads are generally poorly signed as well. It's easy getting from smaller places to the bigger places like Valetta, but finding smaller attractions usually requires some good navigating. I suggest for instance looking over your shoulder at junctions as well, since there might be signs along a route to a certain destination only for the oncoming traffic. The island(s) are very small though, so it's hard to get completely lost.

Beaches can be dangerous. There are some nasty rips around Malta that can drag you out. Especially noterious is Goldern Beach, though beautiful I would only paddle. My relatives are very reluctant to go swimming there.

This not a danger, just some advice. If you want to visit the HYPOGEUM, sign up as soon as you arrive in Malta. The hypogeum is an underground burial place and temple that was discovered in the early 1900's when some men were laying the foundation for a house. It is guessed that it was built around 3000 BC and it is estimated that around 7000 bodies may have been buried here. Only a limited amount of people at a time can visit here and you must make reservations in advance. The reason for this is a very valid one. Carbon Dioxide exhaled from hoards of tourists began to damage the limestone walls of the burial chamber and at one time the Hypogeum was closed to the public because of this.I really wanted to see this place and I went on a Monday hoping to be able to get in by Friday. Unfortunately,it was booked up through Sunday and I was leaving that day.It was not a total loss...

If you meet a Maltese bloke there called Ralf - he is easily noticeable as he wears deck chair type dungarees - this man does not wash - he is the original soap dodger - he is quite harmless really - he carries his passport in his pocket in case someone asks him to go abroad with him - single ladies be warned! (Every body loves a dreamer)!Bugs have been known to wander into food items so be warned!!!!

by Ian831

The need for wearing some sort of shoe is required when entering water along some of the rocky sea fronts due to sharp rocks. The only other fault was too much rubbish on some coastal areas from picnic's. Bus fares on direct routes at least twice of indirect routes yet indirect routes give better sight-seeing chances.Don't take pay as you go mobiles without checking if they will work first. we found BTcellnet worked ok but could get 1to1 or Vodaphone to work except for text We found a restaurant that was disgraceful with the service and management rudeness worse than ever met anywhere in Malta otherwise this trip again would have been great

Arab World. Never offer the left hand to shake!

by isant

For Muslims the left hand is "unclean". If for some reason or other, you cannot use your right hand - just do not shake hands. Save yourself and others lots of needless embarassment!

Do not come to Malta during the General elections!

by maltesegrl

Its a messy sight! When results are out, general services come to a halt and the streets are filled with celebrations, which last at least 4 days.

Look RIGHT when crossing

by pieter_jan_v

I cannot say it enough. As a former British colony, the traffic still is keeping LEFT,

by Maurizioago

Cigarettes cost more than in Italy. I mean the cheapest brand.I strongly recommend to bring some packets from your country.

Slippery When Wet

by Gili_S

OK, A real warning for a change, in some places rocks falling, in other places it might be slippery when wet, so be careful out there.
