A few hundred meters from the fortress in Soroca there is a border crossing to / from Ukraine over the Nistru river over a floating platform.

We wanted to cross as the nicest views over the fortress are from the other side of the river, but lack of visa meant we couldn’t. Next time, maybe….

From Soroca we wannted to see the archaeological complex of Orheiul Vechi, a landmark for Moldova and a craddle of civilisations. the objectiuve being close to the town of Orhei, we were advised to take the Chisinau bus and stop in Orhei.

There are several buses a day leaving for Chisinau, and in the morning they leave from Soroca almost every hour starting 8 a.m. you can buy tickets until town of Orhei. A little less than 2 hours for 35 lei.

As our destination - the archaeological complex of Orheiul Vechi (aka between the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni) which is about 25 km far from the town of Orhei, we had to find some transport. The easiest and fastest way is to look for some cars & drivers waiting in the bus station in Orhei. If you don’t manage to find any, just ask around among the vendors at their kiosks, our ride was 20 minutes and 150 lei (30 romanian lei, 10 euros), but I’m sure a little bargain wouldn’t have offended anyone..

    by bus from Chisinau

From Chisinau there are several small buses to Soroca every day, staring from early morning to mid afternoon. The journey takes 2h 45 minutes through a nice landscape and costs 50 lei (10 Romanian lei, 3 Euros).

Buses to north of Chisinau, Soroca included, do not leave from the Central Bus Station in Chisinau any longer. They leave from another bus station outside the city centre (10 minutes walk from downtown) called “Gara de Nord” (locals will be able to show you the way, just after crossing a bridge).

The bus station in Soroca is within 500m from downtown, but you can always take a rutiera (minibus).
