  • Kavkazkaya Plennitsa: Put this restaurant on your short list

by EatMorePossum Written Apr 11, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In my opinion this is the overall best in town. They have an attractive main restaurant area, a quiet, smaller area, and an interesting courtyard area (in good weather). The food is excellent, the service is excellent (which is a rarity in Kishinev), and the prices are very reasonable.

Favorite Dish: Don't miss out on their shashlik.

  • Hutoroc Restaurant: Hutoroc Restaurant

by EatMorePossum Written Apr 11, 2008

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant offers excellent Ukrainian food and an attractive, comfortable decor. However, they also offer what is arguably the worst service in Kishinev. Food is served at random intervals in no apparant order. Your salad might be served after your entree, or your dinner companions might get their soup as you finish desert.

  • Greenhills Bistro: Fabulous Service

by Moldovian Written Feb 26, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This restaurant is positioned on Stefan Cel Marie, the main road in central Chisinau. The food is of a very high standard with excellent waiter service.

It has been my best experience of eating out in Chisinau to date.

Favorite Dish: Any of the lamb or veal main courses are excellent value and have wonderful taste.

    Oraşul Vechi: Oraşul Vechi

by iwys Updated Feb 3, 2008

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Oraşul Vechi is a small restaurant in the old city, serving a variety of Moldovan food. I went there because I had read that it was famous for its grills and seafood. I ate soup and mixed fish kebab. The soup was good, but unfortunately one of the fish was so far from fresh that it was inedible. Chişinău is, of course, a long way from the sea. I think you'll be OK if you stick to meat. The service was good and the restaurant has a pleasant, intimate atmosphere. It is, however, very expensive by Moldovan standards. So, it is in my opinion, like my fish kebab, a mixture of good and bad.

There are only places for around 20 diners, so reservation is advisable.

  • symposium, chisinau, moldova: upmarket in Chisinau

by davidorchard Written Dec 3, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Symposium in Chisinau (Moldova's capital) is slightly tucked-away off the main boulevard, but is well worth a visit. Possibly the best restaurant in Chisinau - and certainly one of the most reliable - it is not expensive. Also, you will not get an upset stomach from eating there (said he from experience elsewhere in Chisinau !!)

Atmosphere is cellar-like with splendid painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps, service is impeccable (unusual in Chisinau !), and food is essentially home-cooked to order, but served relatively quickly (even if there is a large party elsewhere in the restaurant, you get served speedily enough, which shows good kitchen organisation.) Wine list is good and wines well-served. Staff (by now you will have guessed this) are young and very well-trained.

Favorite Dish: Pork Paprikaz - this is a form of goulash that is very well made indeed, with tender meat, loads of peppers and onions, and a delightful paprika goulash sauce that is neither too fatty nor too spicy.

Their various ways of doing steak are notably good as well - Moldovan restaurants tend to refer to this as 'veal' on menus, but it's really mature steak. The 'Veal with pepper sauce' at the Symposium is really a 'Steak au Poivre', but they will do it rare if you ask. And very good it is too.

La Taifas - Casa Mare: traditional food in a traditional atmosphere

    by S.Cunis Updated Aug 1, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The restaurant is in a very traditional style and is a fine place to enjoy traditional food.
In the evening they sometimes also have music.
They are open from morning to midnight, so it also is a great place for a lunch break when you walk around town.

Favorite Dish: Just try those traditional dishes. Even a simple mamaliga cu brinza or placinta cu brinza is absolutely delicious. For a lighter taste chose brinza de vacii for a stronger taste brinza de oaie, which will make you just a little more thirsty.

    vegetable market: Chisinau

by josephescu Written Jun 2, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The vegetable market in Chisinau keeps a flavour lost throughout Europe – actual old farmers and peasants sell their crops 110% eco-quality, younger ones even “advertise” their merchandise by shouting various funny catchphrases, a place crowded with people moving all directions and carrying everything you can imagine. Local bakeries, donuts and sweets, excellent pickles and delicious fruits, this is a place to take your lunch while observing people.

La Taifas: Be sure you don't miss it

by josephescu Written Jun 2, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Crème de la crème of restaurants in Chisinau located just opposite the Romanian embassy. Wide variety of Moldavian cuisine, expect to pay around 10 EUR for a full meal including desert. And is so delicious that you can be sorry for you have only one stomach.

If you have the budget, opt for a bottled wine instead of the house one.

Favorite Dish: Don’t miss the home made noodles and the roasted duck filled with plums. In fact, don’t miss anything, try as much as you can.

    Buddha Bar: good for breakfast

by josephescu Written Jun 2, 2007

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

A fancy fusion style cafe rather expensive as per Chisinau standards, Buddha Bar opens early enough for breakfast.
Plenty of noisy nouveau riche during the night, we were the only ones at breakfast. Try the Russian salad.
    Polite and prompt service.

Traditional Romanian fare with French-style cuisine too, in an elegant cellar with attentive but not overbearing waiters. Not as expensive as it looks.

Favorite Dish: The tocana with mamaliga was great, and some fantastic desserts too.

This is a really nice cafe. Its interior is well designed what makes the atmosphere of the place. The staff (young women) is well dressed too and speaks English. Except coffee they offer a wide variety of cakes. You may have a look at them and choose what seems to be the most tasty.:) Unfortunatelly, I was told that the cafe is open only till 5 pm. I hope only that day... Prices about average.

This is very good restaurant. It is well designed outiside, as well as inside. The staff is nice and well dressed in Ukrainian folk cloths. You may feel that you are inside a real Ukrainian farm house complete with a farmstead. Everything served to your table, including bread, sausages and spicy salted fat, are the restaurant’s own products. They have English menu. The atmosphere of the place determine you to stay longer and longer... And it is possible as prices are not high compering with the restaurant's quality. The restaurant is open every day from 11 am till 11 pm.

This is over-advertised restaurant. It is said to beone of the best restaurants in Chisinau. In fact, it isn't. The quality of dishes is ok but portions are small and if you are hungry you'd better take two or three courses. Morover, there is little offer of local cuisine. All these not in the building but under a tent what doesn't look nice. Prices are high. The restaurant is open from 9 am till 11 pm.

    The Alaverdi: The Alaverdi Restaurant

by Fen Updated Sep 20, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I had fun experiencing something special, tasting an unforgettable aroma of famous Georgian wines and refined dishes, gifted to the world by sunny Georgia, your choice is definitely the restaurant "Alaverdy" .

Every detail - waiters, dressed in national Georgian clothes, pictures and daggers on the restaurant walls, heady smells of wines and specific dishes-expresses a magic spirit of affable Georgia feeling in the restaurant air.

Favorite Dish: I had a local Georgian dish which was really nice, although I can't remember what it was.

Yes I know, how very useful....! *grin*

    This is where I dined
