For the rich & the famous, this is a real good place to shop for branded items. All the boutiques carry the most highly sought items. I remebered a group of Japanese tourists heading for the most expensive leather store (that was in the early '90s before the economy downturn).
MONTE CARLO CASINO: Expensive & one certainly has to look like a high-roller to enjoy the ambience of this casino. Forget everything you know about Vegas. This is not the place for poor souls like us. The ambience, the splendour & the elegance of the place can be very imposing for those who are not prepared to fork out any cash/platinum card! Minimum bet in the VIP rooms? US$5000! How's that for a hand? And for a night, you could possibly give away your entire apartment!
Bring along an umbrella. It rains quite a bit here. Monaco is actually a very small country made up of 4 distinct parts:1) Monaco Ville - the older section of the town.2) Monte Carlo - the glitzy part, where the luxury casino is.3) Fontvieille - the industrial section.4) La Condamine - the port.
When you are in Monaco, you MUST of course see the Royal Palace, Cathedral and 'old town.' The architecture is beautiful. Monaco is unique in that it is kept very clean and pristine. The security is ever-present, so you really don't have to worry about crime of any fashion. (For those who don't like to be on camera, it can be slightly disconcerting, since surveillance equipment is literally everywhere, probably even in hotel rooms!!! -- I heard Monaco's surveillance system served as some inspiration in the development of the Big Brother reality television show).
This is my buddy Monica and I enjoying the Monte Carlo night lights from the palace property. This was just prior to our visit to the Grand Casino. That casino was WAY out of our league so instead we ended up at the Sun Casino, still very nice by the way. I played a little bit and lost that little bit, but it was fun to experience the glitz and glamour even if just for a short while. For those car lovers out there, you will have much to feast your eyes on in Monte Carlo! I have never seen such sexy sports cars!
Visit the palace overlooking the harbor. You will have a view that you can just sit there for hours pinching yourself saying 'Am I really here'. There are a plethora of shops up on the hill as well. That year on April 18th, 1956 I was about 10 years old and collecting stamps, I rushed to buy the 3 Monaco stamps showing this wedding where there were their pictures and I payed a lot of money and then was not able to go to the movie for a while to cover this expense. But still I don't regret that

See the Royal Palace. This is one of the guards on duty outside. Like Buckingham Palace, the 'changing of the guard' is an elaborate procedure, almost designed with tourists in mind.
stop gawping at all the boats and go to the Royal Palace. This is where the Grimaldi family live (you know, Princesses Caroline and Stephanie, and their father Rainier, and not forgetting Prince Albert, of course).
