The Palace Square/ The Palace

by nixca316

I can just imagine Grace Kelly, her husband and her kids walking around this place. Grace Kelly to the people of Monaco, is a canonized saint. She was well loved here. The Grimaldi Family has ruled the Principality since 1297. Originally, it was a Genoese fortress (1215). What if Prince Albert have fans who want to visit him? Hmmmm...you have to pass through the sentinels, I guess. =)

Monaco

Monaco is a small city-state in Western Europe and is situated along the famous French Riviera between the Mediterranean Sea and France. It is about 20km's north east of Nice 8km from the border of France and Italy. It has long been a playground of the rich and famous thanks to its lack of income tax. Despite it's small size and population it has more millionaires per capita than any other country in the world.Check out the next picture of the harbour and you'll find the who's who in this world yacht collection. Maybe I can park my kayak somewhere around here?

Shopping

by keeweechic

The Place du Casino, the Avenue des Beaux-Arts and the Metropole Shopping Centre are lined with boutiques of top couturiers. World-renowned jewelers, luxury shops, antiques dealers and decorators display their wares in Casino Square and its neighboring thoroughfares. There are more affordable items on the Boulevard des Moulins but still good quality. Other popular streets include the rue Caroline and the rue Grimaldi. Shops in the pedestrian walkways of Monaco specialise in more local souvenirs.Visitors do not have to pay value-added tax on luxury items.

Fontvieille

This is the site of the Princess Grace Rose Garden and the marina. Fontvielle Park covers nearly 4 acres and has actually been reclaimed from the Mediterranean sea. One of the later attractions is the Stamps and Money Museum along with the Museum of Old Cars/ , showcases the private collections of Prince Rainier..

The Cathedral of Monaco

by keeweechic

On January, 6th 1875, the first stone was laid of the Cathedral and was built during the reign of Charles III and completed in 1884. The Cathedral is built of white stone from la Turbie, the same as the Clock Tower of the Palace and the Spanish Renaissance style altar is made of gilded wood. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.

The Palace of Monaco

by keeweechic

For many centuries, the fortress of Monaco was sought-after by the enemies of the Grimaldi which resulted in numerous battles with the Spanish, Genoese and French. In fact for almost 400 years, Monaco continued as a fortress for defensive purposes. Towards the middle of the 17th century, Prince Honor II (1597-1662) undertook the earliest steps to transform it into a palace. Since his accession in 1949, H.S.H. Prince Rainier III has adopted as his goal the embellishment and modernisation of the Palace. The old frescoes were restored. During the Revolution, the southern wing was destroyed and then rebuilt and today it houses the private apartments of the Grimaldi family. The Museum of Souvenirs of Napoleon and the Archives of the Prince's Palace is also found there. Open to the public : June to October (The great apartments), but the Napoleonic Museum and the Archive collection is open all...

Palais Grimaldi - Monaco

by MichaelFalk1969

The palace of the grandduke of Monaco ... with lots of tacky paintings of the royal family inside. Fun! It reminds me of the film "The mouse that roared" (with Margaret Rutherford) where a mini-republic decides to declare war on Great Britain.

Musee Oceanographique

by MichaelFalk1969

The Musee Oceanographique in Monaco is very interesting as it combines an excellent aquarium with an exhibition on maritime natural history. It was founded by the famous ocean explorer Jaques Costeau.
