Monaco Cathedral

by kucha

As you are walking along the Avenue Saint-Martin, you will walk alongside some beautiful cliff-side gardens and come to the Monaco Cathedral. This cathedral was built in the late 19th century, and was where Princess Grace and Prince Ranier married. It is also where Grace and many of the other Grimaldis are buried.

Oceanography Museum

by kucha

If you walk to the western side of the harbor, there is an elevator that will take you up to Monaco-Ville and deposit you near the Musee Oceanographie (Oceanographic Museum). This is a must see if you have the time. Explorer Jacques Cousteau was the director of the museum for over 30 years, and it has a wonderful aquarium with both tropical and Mediterranean species of marine life.

Walking

by kucha

Gambling and the tourism associated with it has been the primary livelihood of the city for more than a century. If you're not a gambler, don't let that keep you from traveling to Monaco. However, there are many other interesting shore activities in Monte Carlo and the surrounding areas.Since Monaco is such a small geographical area, it seems like it should be easy to walk around the city. But be sure you have strong legs -- the hills are steep! Actually, it is relatively easy to navigate Monte Carlo and Monaco if you take the time to learn where the various "short cuts" are.City maps are widely availalbe that will highlight the tunnels, elevators, and escalators that facilitate touring the city. Check these out and have fun!

Hotel de Paris MonacoTraditional grand hotel with opulent decor built in 1863. Located next the the Casino de Monte-Carlo, this is where the rich and famous stay when not on their yacht. If you can't afford to stay there, just admire the architecture and detail of this great old building.

Prince's Palace

by viddra

The Palace was built on the site of a fortress built by the Genoese in 1215. Here, you can see the Italian style Gallery, the Throne Room, the Louis XV Salon, the Salon Bleu, the Mazarin Salon, the Sainte- Marie Tower and the Main courtyard. It's opened daily from 9.30 AM to 6.00 PM ( June-Sept ), that is, from 10 AM to 5 PM ( Oct ). It's closed from Nov. to May.The admission fee's €6 ( €3 children aged 8-14 )

Changing of the Guard

by Agraichen

Center place of "Old Town" in front of the Palace, the changing of the Prince's Guards is not to be missed. In formal dress, the guard presents 100 year-old tradition at 11:55 AM daily. Get close to the rails near the guard "huts" early as the crowds can get quite large. After enjoy a quiet lunch in one of the many restaurents on the many narrow "streets" of Vieille Ville.

Jardin Animailier

by Agraichen

I love to vist zoos. I dislike the "old style" where the poor animals are in box like cages but the new ones where the humans are in cages and the animals run free are fun.The Monaco zoo unfortunately is the older type, though the do try to make the cages a bit more "home style" than just a concrete box.Still on the side of "the rock" that houses the castle Monaco has a small zoo with a variety of animals including a white tiger.Open from 10:00 to 5:00 most days all year long with a 12:00-2:00 lunch break this is great break on the walk up to the castle for only 4 Euros.

Collection de sas le Prince Souveraine de Monaco

by Agraichen

A must see for every "car nut" that visits Monaco and even those that just appreciate "old" cars but are not fanatics. The museum is a tribute to loving care of historic motor vehicles. It is located at the second level of the Fontvielle "market palace." The collection is not extremely large, but the quality and variety is worth the 6 Euros entry fee.For those that don't like cars, just continue walking a couple minutes toward the next staircase to find the "zoo" that climbs the cliffs next to the castle area of "Monaco Ville."

Visit the Formula 1 Grand Prix

by gabyne

Maybe this is silly tip but there are obviously many people interested in spending a lot of money on watching that kind of event. Otherwise it wouldn't be so expensive... I was there a few days before the Grand Prix which is usually mid of May every year. On the picture you can see a part of the race track and the visitors' grand stands. The picture was taken from the Place du Casino (in front of the Casino).I was told that a lot of the people living close to the race track leave Monaco and rent their apartment for an incredible amount of money so that people can watch the Grand Prix from the window... ;-)

If you have some spare money in your travel budget, visit the well-known Casino Monte Carlo. Just opposite you can find the also well-known "Hotel de Paris" so you don't have to go far after an exciting night at the Casino... ;-)
