Cows

by a5floor

From May till October you will see cows walking outside in their meadow. When the weather allows it, they can come out earlier or go back to the stables earlier.Everywhere in the Netherlands you will see the cows in their meadow. Which is a pleasant sight. These days it is more diffecult for the people who run a place like this. The government is putting more and more rules to hold cows for milk.

Travel agency

by a5floor

For every travel you make, you can go to a travel agency or book via the internet. In the Netherlands you can go to various travel agencies for your next trip. You have to be careful: go to a travel agency that is a member of the ANVR (General Dutch Union of Travelagencies). This organisation is there to garantue your travels. If you book your travels by a travel agency that isn't a member of the ANVR, you won't get your money back when it is going bankrupt. When I am traveling inside Europe I am booking my trips via the internet. For outside Europe most of the time I will go to a travel agency. The travel agency I use, is Vakantiexperts in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands. This travel agency is a small one. But the staff is really helpfull and is informing you really good. For information about Vakantiexperts, go to the website www.vakantiexperts.nl. Any other information of the Apeldoorn...

VAALS - DRIE LANDEN PUNT - 3 LAND POINT

by LoriPori

Located in the Provincie Limburg, VAALS is the place where 3 countries meet - Holland - Belgium - Germany.DRIE LANDEN PUNT is the point where they all come together.People were having fun stepping in different spots and proclaiming which country they were in. It was quite a hoot. " I am now in Germany" one would proclaim. The other would say " I am now in Holland". "Well, I am in Belgium".As you can imagine, this area attracts a lot of tourists. Besides the Drie Landen Punt ( 3 Land Point ) there is a Labyrinth and a Panorama Tower. From Valserberg, the highest hill in the Netherlands, one can admire the superb view of Aachen, just across the frontier. This area is a lot different than the rest of Holland as it is hillier than the usually flat lands. It's probably the reason the Dutch like it here. In nearby Valkenburg, there is even some ski hills.

A BIT ABOUT BREDA

by LoriPori

A city in the southern part of The Netherlands, BREDA was a fortified city of strategic significance. In the 15th century the city's importance grew rapidly. A great Church was built in Brabantine Gothic style, called the Grote Kerk or Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (Church of our Lady).Interesting tourist sites include Spanjaardsgat, Begijnhof (Beguinage), Beyerd and Kasteel Bouvigne, a 17th century castle located in the Mastbos, the woods just outside Breda.

MAASSLUIS

by LoriPori

Maassluis is a town in the Western Netherlands, in the Province of South Holland (Zuid-Holland). MAASSLUIS was founded circa 1346 as a settlement next to a lock (sluis) in the sea barrier between the North Sea and Rotterdam. It is also our home away from home as Hans' sister Nel lives here and we always stay with them when in the Netherlands.I love going to the Centrum and the Harbour area. Love the little shops like the Cheese Shop and the Blokker and the Pastry Shop. And I really like walking along the Canal where you usually see ducks and swans swimming.

VALKENBURG

by LoriPori

South Limburg ( Zuid Limburg ) is made up of hills, villages and towns. The region offers a wealth of opportunities for recreation.VALKENBURG is also known as Valkenburg aan de Geul and sometimes nicknamed the "Marlstone Town". Marl is a form of limestone found locally.Cosy restaurants, shops, sidewalk cafe's, historic buildings and the River Geul, define the face of the town. There are wonderful walks and cycle routes along the banks of the Geul and through woods and forests.Hans and I visited here. He wanted to show me the town he visited as a child, when the family would sometimes vacation here. The whole area is beautiful and so different from the rest of the Netherlands. Whereas most of Holland is flat, this area or the HEUVELLAND is known as Hill Country.Update June 4, 2008Hans and I visited Valkenburg once again. This time is on our way back from the Karlsruhe VT meet and touring...

DELFT

by LoriPori

This lovely town of DELFT certainly does have a special place in our hearts, as Hans was born and grew up in Delft, so there are many memories for him there. One of nine children, Hans would tell me the story how quite often one of the children would fall into the canal and would have to be fished out by one of the neighbours. "Mevrouw, Hansje has fallen into the canal, again" I love that story. HeHe. DELFT, founded around 1100, is a small but very beautiful town, steeped in history. Delft has a strong association with the Dutch Royal Family. Royal burials take place in the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). Delft came from the word Delf (Delven means to dig).Famous for its Delft Blue pottery, Delft teems with canals and Medieval houses with ornate gables.

19 KINDERDIJK WINDMILLS

by LoriPori

Kinderdijk is a village 16 km east from Rotterdam and less than 10km north from Dordrecht. There are 19 KINDERDIJK WINDMILLS in close proximity to each other, forming an impressive symbol of the struggle of the Dutch against the encroaching water. In 1366 and 1369, workers dug the canals (weteringen) through Alblasserwaar to Kinderdijk. The canals were designed to discharge excess water into the River Lek. When the canals were no longer sufficient to cope with rising water levels, Windmills were constructed. Eight were built in 1738 and eight more in 1740, to protect the surrounding land from flooding.Unesco added the Kinderdijk Windmills to its World Heritage list in 1997.A charge of 5,00 Euros for Parking applies. You will get a wonderful brochure about the Windmills from the parking attendants. One brochure per vehicle.

THE WALLED TOWN OF HEUSDEN

by LoriPori

The walled town of HEUSDEN dates back to the beginning of the 12th century and was an important element in the defense of Holland between 1580 and 1620. The Bastion is located on the banks of the River Maas. In the 14th century a large defense wall, including towers and gates, was built around the town.Points of interest include the bastion walls ( vestigingswallen ), the Harbour ( Stadhaven ), the fish market ( Vismarkt), three Windmills ( Molens ) and Saint Catherine's Church. (Catherijnekerk).Heusden is north-west of S'Hertogenbosch and can be reached via the A59 and take exit for N267
