Don't worry, almost everybody in Holland speaks English. We have to learn it at school. We also hear a lot of English, because a lot of programs on the television are spoken in English, and translated in Dutch text. So we can even watch television together.
When you want to mail your letters, you can mail it in the mailboxes you see at the picture. The right side of the mailbox is for mail that has zipcodes 7000 to 9999 from the Netherlands. The left side of the mailbox is for mail that has zipcodes 1000 to 6999 and for mail that goes abroad.

The city that was to become Amsterdam started out as a fishing village founded in the 1200s at the mouth of the Amstel River. A dam was constructed on the river between dikes to protect the settlement and nearby farmland from flooding, hence the name Amsterdam. Amsterdam was chartered as a city around 1300, and became a member of the Hanseatic League (a German trading association) in 1369. In the late sixteenth century, Spanish forces sacked Antwerp in Belgium, at the time the leading port and commercial center of northern Europe.
