Sinterklaas

by ATLC

Not Santa Claus at Christmas but St. Nicholas (Sinterklaas) is the main man for all children (and most adults) in The Netherlands.Yesterday (17 nov 2007) he officially arrived in NL from Spain, his residence. He arrived, as always, by steamboat. This year (2007), St. Nicholas arrives in another Dutch city each year and you can watch it on TV. From their earliest age on, each Dutch child learns that the bishop of Myra, St. Nicholas, comes to The Netherlands with his Black Petes to celebrate his birthday on the 5th of December. He bring presents, through the chimney while he walks the roofs on his white stallion. Each evening from half november until the eve of his birthday, children will put their shoe near the fireplace, filled with a carrot for the horse and a drawing or poem and sing Sinterklaas songs. Each morning, the children will find a little gift in their shoe. The eve of his...

Can I help you?

by ATLC

If you are travelling to The Netherlands, and need information, then please ask!I hope I can help.If you want to know about the Euro, please visit my Europe page! Did you know that in a very early stage they cut off a piece of the Nightwatch by Rembrandt? On the right side, so it fitted somewhere. It gave the picture a whole new dimension. And that's how we know it today. The Nightwatch, most famous painting in the world, can be found at the Rijksmuseum website

Prinsjesdag

by ATLC

Prinsjesdag takes place every year on the 3rd Tuesday of September. On this day, the Queen rides her golden coach from her palace to parliament in The Hague, the political capital of NL.She reads a speech in which the government unfolds its plans and views for the new parliamentary year. After that, she rides back to her palace again and the inevitable balcony scene takes place. It's great fun to watch, the pomp and circumstance, the golden coach, the royalty and all the hats that the ladies wear. But the real work starts there. That same day, the Minister of Finance presents the budget and long and interesting debate then commences in parliament about what the government proposes to do in the coming year. Old maps from Blaeu

by ATLC

Old maps hold an endless fascination for me. It's amazing how some 400 years ago, people were able to draw maps of places so meticuously detailed.I am sometimes lucky enough to get a print as a gift and I sometimes buy one. The maps here (free to download) are from the Blaeu's Toonneel der Steden (1652). Blaeu was the master map maker of The Netherlands (including Flemish Netherlands, now Belgian territory).Discover the wealth of maps here:Blaeu maps(University of Groningen, Literature)

National Anthem: het Wilhelmus

by ATLC

Text in English (1st and 6th verse):--William of Nassau, scionOf a Dutch and ancient line,I dedicate undying Faith to this land of mine. A prince I am, undaunted, Of Orange, ever free, To the king of Spain I've granted A lifelong loyalty.--A shield and my reliance,O God, Thou ever wert. I'll trust unto Thy guidance.O leave me not ungirt. That I may stay a pious Servant of Thine for aye And drive the plagues that try us And tyranny away.-- I am very fond of our national anthem. Maybe it is because I lived abroad for a few years and when you hear it on the world radio it gives a strange feeling of being far away from home, even though I was a child. Our national anthem is the "Wilhelmus".Written around 1568, and is accredited to the poet and diplomat Philip van Marnix, Seigneur of Sint Aldegonde (1540-1598) an ardent supporter of Prince William of Orange. We usually sing the first and sixth...

De grootste Nederlander

by CliffClaven

As 2004 drew to a close, the Dutch were busy voting for the greatest Dutch person of all time. There was a short list of 200 to choose from, including such household names as Joan van der Capellen tot den Pol. Okay, that’s unfair, since not many people have heard of some of Dutch history’s more obscure characters. You’d probably recognise the names of a few painters (Vermeer), one or two monarchs (William of Orange), the odd sporting personality (Johann Cruyff) and a flamboyant beer mogul (Freddy Heineken). Oh, and Anne Frank was on the list, even though she wasn’t Dutch. She wasn’t actually anything, since she had been stripped of her nationality when forced to leave Nazi Germany.P.S. Pim Fortuyn, the populist politician assassinated in 2002, won the poll ahead of William of Orange, who led the revolt against Spanish occupation in the 16th century.

Calling home from the Netherlands

by Pijlmans

There are several companies that offer cheap calls abroad through 0900 numbers. You pay a fixed price for these 0900 numbers, which connect you to the number abroad of your choice. Often, these services are even cheaper than the SkypeOut rates (Calls through the voip program Skype from pc to pc are free of course).Read e.g. here about it in english: http://www.telestunt.nl/english.phpThis site compares rates between these companies: http://www.televergelijk.nl/. Select the country and "vast" (landline) or "mobiel" (mobile) and choose the cheapest provider!Note that you should not use these services through a public pay-phone, since you pay high extra charges for calling 090x-numbers using public pay-phones. You better use a normal landline !

Gabled buildings

by DanielF

Gables are the most recognisable feature in Dutch buildings. They can adopt different forms, depending on the periode when the house was built or its practical function. The oldest version is known as trapgevel or step gables . When they have a bell shape, they are called "klokgevel" and when they adopt the shape of a "neck", they are called "halsgevel". Other more elaborated buildings may have combinations of the different types of gables. Finally, the most simple and less ornamented gables are used in the depot and storing buildings and are known as tuitgevel.
