Great people

by DanielF

There are many stereotypes circulating about Dutch people. Some of them are nice, others not so nice. Like all the stereotypes, they may have have a historical basis, they do not take into account the huge changes that our society has undergone in the last decades. Of course, as in any other place, stereotypes and generalisations are usually misleading when dealing with individuals. From my personal experience, most of the Dutch people I have met are friendly, welcoming, multilingual, cultivated and party-minded... My friends.

Breda Jazz Festival

by Nathalie_B

Every year, usually in the month of May, the city of Breda hosts International Jazz Festival. Bands from all over the world are coming to play on many podiums that are mostly placed in the city center. Most of the performances are free, unless you're interested in attending some special concerts. The 2007 festival is going to take place between 17 and 20 of May, DON'T MISS IT! Great experience and good music, you'll be able to listen to all the possible styles of jazz!

Guilders into Euro since 2002

by SLLiew

Since full implementation in 2002, the Dutch guilder is out and the Euros is in.It seems a shame but Holland is a progressive looking nation and fast to adapt in the changing European arena.Fortunately, I kept some old guilders with me being an amateur coin collector. May be they will appreciate in value one day.

Windmills

by SLLiew

This is the iconic symbol of Holland - the Windmills.Sad to hear that windmills are getting fewer and fewer. It is a renewable energy source of harnessing the wind into corn milling, water drainang and all types of purposes of industrial work. So it was apt to get a good picture of the perhaps the last few working windmills of Holland.

Cheese making process in life

by SLLiew

After visiting a cheese outlet, witnessing how cheese is made, somehow cheese becomes less appetizing.Cheese is a great way to store milk in the days before refrigeration and pastuerization of fresh milk. 1 kilogram of milk makes 100 gram of cheese.Starting with the curdling of milk, separating the solid from liquid, soaking in brine and left to matures. Different kinds of process make different cheese like Gouda, Edam and Swiss Cheese. Now I know better where cheese comes from. Holland.

Milk Cows in the pastures

by SLLiew

While in a tour bus driving across Holland, saw this farm of dairy black and white Friesian (Holstein) cows. Reminded of the famous "Dutch Lady" condensed milk and milk powder which was popular in many households in Malaysia. So a sight to behold and reminisce.

Send a postcard

by tompt

If you want to send a postcard to your loved ones at home, or just your VT friends, you have to buy postcards and stamps first.Sometimes shops sell stamps with the postcards, but not always the stamps for overseas mail. In that case you have to get them at a postoffice. And be warned! we dutch we want your money, so stamps are often sold in booklets only. For postcards or letters to addresses in Netherlands you need a 0.39 stamp (sold per 10), in europe stamps are 0.69 and outside europe it costs 0.85 Euro (sold per 5).You write your cards, put a stamp on it. Then you find a postbox. They are red and have two openings. The left one says:overige postcodes. It is for all mail outside the area. The right one has numbers. For instance: postcodes van 2200-2800. Adresses in the Netherlands will have 4 digits and two letters in the postal code (in front of the city). We have 2435WX. So our...

Windmills

by tini58de

Aren't they THE symbol of the Netherlands? Windmills? You will find them all over the country, especially in Noord Holland and around Kinderdijk and many of them are still very well kept and can be visited! For more information and pictures please do have a look at my Windmill travellogue!

Tip Photo
Canals

by tini58de

Since the Netherlands are such a flat country - very often even with "elevations" below sea level, there are so many canals that are just as important as streets! In Amsterdam you can take boat tours through the "grachten", same in Alkmaar and I guess in many more other villages! For more information do have a look at the Canal travelloge below!

Tip Photo
Cheese

by tini58de

Dutch cheese is known throughout the world: there is Gouda, Leerdam - oh well, you will find so many names on the map that you are already familiar with............During the summer there is the famous Alkmaar Cheese Market, which we really enjoyed a lot, although it seemed to be merely a tourist thing!Still it is absolutely worthwhile visiting!
