Bicycles
The Netherlands really ARE a country of bicycles!!! The country is basically flat, so that is ideal for cycling!!! Plus there are always pretty broad "fietsen pads" - bicycle trails, so you are always on the safe side as a cyclist!

I always thought that the wooden shoes were a thing of the past - and recently a tourist thing.....Well, when we visited the Netherlands for the second time I could not believe my ears and eyes: there was really a family walking in front of us and the father wore - wooden shoes!!! So this really seems to be at least periodically a thing to do!!!

"Where are you from?""I'm from Holland""Oh, I don't know about that; but I loved The Netherlands!"Sounds familiar? In Dutch I would always say that I'm from "Nederland" (The Netherlands), but if anyone asks me in English, I answer that I'm from Holland. In fact I am because where I live is "Holland".Confused? The official name of the country is "The Kindom of The Netherlands", so: The Netherlands is the correct word for our country.Holland comes from two provinces: Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland. Together they're "Holland". In the old days, this part used to be the most important part of the country. This is why "Holland" is often called "Netherlands" and viceversa. And yes, we are and speak "Dutch", which is not the same as "Deutch", which is the German word for well... German. There are two theories where "Dutch" comes from. One is that one very confused American mixed up "Dutch" and...

There is a reason that Dutch chocolate is famous the world over. Amsterdam has many enticing candy stores for those with a sweet tooth.A lot as been made of Amsterdam's hashish clubs and such. As far as I am concerned, the habit that I want to feed in the Netherlands is my addiction to fine chocolates. No interventions necessary......

The city of Amsterdam is criss-crossed with numerous picturesque canals. Far from scenic wonders alone, the waterways are another way of getting around in the Dutch capital. We enjoyed an afternoon tourist "cruise" through the canals of Amsterdam. It's touristy, but relaxing. I would advise JUST cruising, rather than finding one that includes an evening meal. You can find better food at a restaurant. : )

I'm just kidding, actually..... diamonds are of top quality and excellent price in Amsterdam. My joke with this tip is this... if you are fortunate enough to have your lady looking at chocolates instead of carats, be generous. Dutch treats are among the world's best. : ) ....hearing my wife say "I don't really see anything that I want" at the Von Moppes Diamond Shoppe. : )
