A very pedestrian city... Amsterdam

by 850prc

Walking around the lovely town of Amsterdam is definitely the way to go. There is so much to do and enjoy. From the bakeries, to the diamond shops, the city parks and (if you're so inclined) those famous smoky clubs, everything is accessible pretty much on foot. A funny moment.... later repeated in Italy.... We were in the Vondelpark area and we saw two individuals who were, shall we say, REALLY making out. I'm talking porn movie level stuff, folks. I don't believe my wife was amused, either by what she saw OR what she thought I might be thinking. ; )It's not actually a fond memory, but I'll always remember it. As I was about to take the accompanying photo, I looked up just in time to realize that I was standing on a tram track.... and the tram was bearing down ON me. I moved and got the picture, living to tell you all about it. Watch out.... it's a pedestrian city, but you can sure get...

the Bridges

by pepples46

Holland is neat, I loved my time there. living just across the Border for 3 years, in the Ruhrpott of Oberhausen....the weekends where reserved going across the border. where the food was even better then in Germany and cheaper, the air much better, the recreational value...priceless.but you have to drive out of the City, especially Amsterdam, is so overcrowded. these Bridges.. we all know from paintings, are still in use and bring a very romantic feel to each landscape, City or Town, and of course make a great photothis in Veere and it's Marina..not far from Middelburg...ATLC helped me to get my facts right

Schouwen Duiveland

by sammie

No you can't escape it. Schouwen Duiveland again. So..... here is some small info about Schouwen.Schouwen-Duiveland is the most northern part of the province of Zeeland. This area is connected to the main land with a bridge and three dams. The “Brouwersdam” and the “Grevelingendam” on the North side, and the “Stormvloedkering” (storm flood barrier) and the “Zeelandbridge” on the Southside. On the Westside (Westhoek) of Schouwen-Duiveland, you can find Zeeland’s widest beaches – with a total length of 17 kilometres. Right behind the beaches there’s a forest- and dune-area of about 1.100 ha, which can mostly be entered at anytime. Many deer make a popular attraction in this area, you can meet them during a hike on one of the many tracks. Naturally there are also bicycle and riding tracks.Of course, there are also other parts of the island that are nice to visit or just to drop by. Well...

flooddisaster 1953

by sammie

During the night of 1Feb. the Netherlands were hit by a flood dissaster. A severe north-westerstorm roaring across the Northsea and the Netherlands. The province of Zeeland, the islands of South-Holland and the south-west corner of the province of North-Brabant were hit very heavily. The tragic balance of this flood dissaster indicated that 1836 people had drowned and thousands of cattle also met the same fate. Thousands of buildings were destroyed or damaged and thousands of people had to find accommodations elsewhere. In world-history probably not such a serious disaster, but in the villages where 10% of the population drowned, it was considered a disaster of major proportions. For more info plz visit my province Zeelandpage (traveloque) In 1953 there was a disaster in Zeeland and great parts of Zuid-Holland and Noord-Brabant. Because this part of the Netherlands had no big...

Basic information about the Dutch

by sammie

Did you know... That when the name Holland is used instead of The Netherlands, it actually refers to the two Western coastal provinces, North and South Holland, which have played an important role in the country's history That centuries ago the North-West of the Netherlands was covered with trees... That's where the name Holland comes from; "holt-land", which means woodland. That The Netherlands is one of Europe's smallest and most densely populated countries. That both the people and their language are known to English-speakers as Dutch, a name derived from the old language named Diets. The old low-frankish dialects were very familiar to the 'low-german' dialects that were spoken in the most parts of northern Europe. Together they were referred to as 'nederduits' (low-german) and the language in the area of the low countries was called 'diets', which explains the name 'Dutch' in...

There are two kinds of ships on the port of Amsterdam:The old tarditional ones, and the modern, the old are mostly to be like a living museum, like the famous Oostindeivaarder! As you can read in my Rotterdam page intro, Rotterdam was founded as a harbour city and all that concerns navigation must be very close to Rotterdam, once again the largest port in the world!impressing!
