Recipe: Andijviestamppot

by ATLC

STAMPPOT MET ANDIJVIE EN SPEKJES – Mashed potatoes with Escarole and Crispy Fried BaconThis is what we ate when VT member djoatlarge came to stay for a cycling trip in our area.Andijvie – escarole, with its fluted leaves is not unlike a lettuce to look at, but it is in fact a member of the chicory family; sometimes referred to as broad or curly leafed endive. It has a slightly bitter taste and is eaten as a salad green, braised, or as in this very typical Dutch recipe.INGREDIENTS400 g (3/4 lb) escarole250 g (1/2 lb) rindless bacon (one thick piece or ready diced)1 kg (2 lbs) floury potato25 g (1 oz; 2 tbsp.) buttermilk to mixsalt and freshly ground black pepperPREPARATIONWash and drain the escarole, shred finely and set aside.Dice the bacon and fry until crisp, set aside and reserve the fat.Peel and quarter the potatoes and put in a large pan with just enough water to cover. Bring to the...

FOOD: Stroopwafel

by ATLC

You might call this the national cookie, the size of approx. an American pancake. They can be bought anywhere but they're best from a market stall, hot and freshly made.A thin waffle with caramel syrup in between. I usually take one bite, then put it over my coffee mug (with hot coffee in of course) with the spoon sticking through the hole. Then the syrup melts a little and they are even more delicious.Great souvenir to take him in a nice Delft blue tin.If you want to know how stroopwafels are made, visit my Gouda pageOct.2007: I just discovered I'm talking about coffee here, but what you see on the photo is tea! Oh well :-)

Sint Maarten on 11 november

by ardnas67

On November 11th in some parts of the Netherlands we celebrate Sint Maarten. The children make a lantern, an in the evening the go singing along the cloosed doors. They get candy. The history of this event: on 11 november 397 Martinus (maarten) died. He was a rich man that one day in winter cut his coat with a knife, and gave half of his coat to a pour man.

Sinterklaas

by ardnas67

Every year in November Sinterklaas is coming with the boat from Spain. His boat is filled with presents for the kids. On december 5th he celebrates his birthday and he and the zwarte pieten, give the presents to the kids. Before december the 5th, you may place your shoe near the chimney, and sing a special Sinterklaas-song. The next morning you wil find a little gift in your shoe. The story goes that Sinterklaas with his horse, a grey, is walking on the roofs of the houses. But nobody ever saw. It's the big secret of Sinterklaas how he get's the presents in the houses. This is the story of Sinterklaas, a typical Dutch event in December. In other countries they have Santa Claus, maybey they are brothers?

Clogs are safety shoes

by SLLiew

Clogs known in Dutch as klompen has passed the safety shoe test in EU. Supposedly wearing clogs is good for your feet. Clogs are made from poplar or willow trees. Now they are mostly sold at tourist shops for you and for me.

Marihuana

by didgeridorien

The thing Holland is known for all over the world is the legal selling of marihuana. It actually is a very strange law, because growing more than 3 plants is illegal (and you need more to run a coffeeshop), selling your stuff to a coffeeshop is illegal to, but a coffeeshop can legally sell up to 5 grams to you. The politicians are constantly debating about this, half of them wants to make it all illegal and the other half wants to make the whole thing legal. It's not normal to smoke in restaurants and bars, you only smoke in the coffeeshop, outside or at home.

5 May Bevrijdingsdag

by a5floor

On 5 May we have 'Bevrijdingsdag'. During the 2nd World War the Netherlands was captured by the Germans. The Canadian, American and British soldiers rescued us from the Germans. 5 May is the day that we celebrate the fact that we are a 'free country'.There is a foundation for this day. It is called 'Stichting 4 en 5 mei'. They have a website (www.4en5mei.nl), but it is only in Dutch. Haven't found an Eglish section at this site. The address of this foundation is:Nationaal Comite 4 en 5 meiRapenburgerstraat 1091011 VL AmsterdamThe NetherlandsPhone: +31-(0)20-6209688Fax: +31-(0)20-6205620Email: info@natcom45.nl

Greetings

by Dutchnatasja

A warm and hearty handshake is an appropriate greeting for both men and women. It is also popular among friends to kiss on alternating cheeks three times when greeting. A common phrase is Hoe gaat het? (How are you?) or Alles goed? (Is everything alright?) While people may wave if greeted from a distance, shouting is impolite. The Dutch address others by their titles and family names. When answering the telephone, both the caller and receiver identify themselves before starting a conversation. It is rude not to do so.
