Wooden shoes

by dr.firas

The wooden shoes!Hmmm I bet it is not so comfortable to walk with, neither the sound and noise when it touch the ground! LOLand they don't exist anymore, I mean no one use them, but it was a day *history* when Dutch people use to walk with hee hee!now it is just tradition and typical local thing, tourists and visitors adore it, they just love to buy souvenires like this!

English-speakers

by barryg23

On arrival at Schipol airport the first thing I noticed was that practically all the signs were in English. This was rather useful as I had only a word or two of Dutch (learned from my guide-book) but also disappointing as when arrviving in a foreign country I always enjoy being lost for a while. Those few words of Dutch I had learned were quickly forgotten over the next few days as we didn't need them at all. Everyone here speaks English. Normally when abroad, I feel it is customary to speak some of the local language, but in Netherlands it just wasn't necessary. In shops, on the streets of Amsterdam, in the pubs, and even in the smaller towns outside Amsterdam, the locals recognised us as tourists and would speak English to us before we even started conversation. I don't know why it is that the people here have adopted a second language so well but it's extremely impressive!

Herring

by Nathalie_B

This is one of the typical Dutch dishes. Not my favorite though, but some people really enjoy it, with a lot of onions of course. In Holland, you can find herring all year round, but if you want to have a really good one then the season is in May. Once the ships come back from the sea and bring herring to the markets Dutch rush to buy it (as much as possible)

The Undutchables

by Nathalie_B

Would you like to know more about Dutch and their culture? The Undutchables is a wonderful book, it is easy to read, and it is written in a very humorous way. After living in the Netherlands for a while I can say that pretty much eveything that the book describes is true. Usually, tourists who come to Holland for a week or so simply don't have enough time to get properly acquainted with all the cultural values and traditions. Try to read the book before you actually visit the country, you'll be amazed how much fun you'll have when you get there ;-)

Yumi, before Exteniction *Advokaat*

by dr.firas

LOL It was the idea of CarinThanks a lot for making me taste this wonderful very old traditional kind of Dutch dessert:*Advokaat*, it is an uncooked egg, fresh one, with alcohole and it is sweet, Ali told me the new generation of Dutch people don't like it, and it is about to be extinct, well if so I was lucky to try it, and shall say it would be a pitty if one day it will disappear!

New years eve

by sim1

New years Eve.... the end of another year. But we don't just end the year in Holland; we end it with a big BANG! At 12 o'clock at night we toast with champagne and wish each other a happy new year. Only minutes later everyone goes outside to start the fireworks. Everyone has plenty of fireworks with him and sets it off outside of their house. There are loud bangers, or beautiful firework that lite up the sky. And don't think it is just one or two little pieces of firework... it is FIREWORK! After that the real celebrations can begin. I always wish all my neighbours a happy new year and have a drink at their place. Later in the night we mostly go to the pub, and just party on all night long. Early in the morning, when the sun is thinking about rising again, we go home..... what a year it has been......

Christmas

by sim1

Christmas I don't think I need to say a lot about Christmas. We celebrate it two days, but don't really do a lot with Christmas Eve. Although it has never been the tradition, more and more people tend to give each other gifts during Christmas. These two days are all about going to church, visit the family, and eating a lot. But there is also a growing group of people, like me, that are hardly ever at home during these days.
