Everywhere in The Netherlands!: New Years Eve
GYOW profile photo

GYOW 8 reviews

If you are bored with the same old hangover on New Years Day, or the same old partying OR just sitting in and missing everything then GO TO HOLLAND its sheer madness and everyone should see it once!

At midnight on New Years Eve Health & Safety is thrown to the window as the residents on every street come out and light fireworks in the front garden or the path outside their house. They light braziers, candles or anything that will burn and set off the most powerful of fireworks - the like of which in England we would only see in a formal organised 'pay to see' event.

You really need to be there as words cannot give you the full effect, with bangs and wizzing going off from every direction its deafening and I would image just like being at the battle front. Although no one is aiming for you there are random wayward fireworks that shoot down the pavement and through the parked cars!

Give it a try! I now go every year!

Dress Code: Something warm plus a camera and tripod!

PEANUT SHELLS ON THE FLOOR IN DUTCH PUB

When you go to a pub, you will often find little baskets with nuts or peanuts on the bar. You can take all you want.
Sometimes there are peanuts in the shell too. You're supposed to peel them and drop the shells to the floor. T'hey'll be cleaned up when the pub closes.
So don't be surprised or worried when you enter a pub and you see the floor strewn with peanut shells!

Dress Code: No dress code. The Hoofdwacht hosts a lot of outdoor live concerts on the little square in front of it. F

PLAYIN' THE BLUES

Every year on the last Sunday of July, Brielle hosts its very own blues festival: Brielle Blues.

From 3-10 a.m. there is live music on 3 open air stages and after 10 a pub crawl along Brielle's many pubs, all having live bands.

The festival is free.

This Sunday is definitely ALWAYS a day that I am at home in Brielle to enjoy this festival. Preferably with lots of friends coming over so that we can all enjoy the blues.

Dress Code: Come as you are. Or buy one of the black tshirts that are issued yearly with the programma of that year.

Amsterdam Red Light District: Night "window" shopping

Along one of the canals is the infamous red light district of Amsterdam.

Many things are legal in Netherland including prostitution. There are adult book stores, adult shows as well as hookers displaying themselves in windows beckoning on-lookers.

Recommend going in a group and just window shop only.

Cafe Wiener

We stopped at this little bar, shared a few laughs and drank a few beers with the owner. She gave us the perspective and insight of a local Amsterdam resident. We had the run of the bar, trying drinks native to the area! Your in the right place if you look up and see money (bills) from different countries, left by customers posted on the wall.

The bike is a wonderful discovery, very clean for ecology, very good for your health, and very economic for your pocets and budget, Dutch people understood this very well and very soon, and they reacted like civilized persons should, so almost every one has his her bike, and there are lightsigns for it, and special streets for it too :-D
