Lierop – impressive dome-church

by vtveen

On a bike trip in the province of Noord-Brabant we were approaching the little village of Lierop and couldn’t miss the building of the local church with an impressive dome towering above the houses and shops. Coming closer it turned out to be the Church of the Holy Name Jesus (Heilige Naam Jezus Kerk). This neo-romanesque Catholic Church was designed by architect Carl Weber, who designed more than 20 churches in the Netherlands. This one was his smallest and last, which was built between 1890 and 1892. The church shows lots of Neo-gothic elements and is dominated by an impressive dome with a height of more than 50 metres. As we entered the church we really were completely surprised by the beauty of its interior; it has such a warm red colour - we were told every brick has been painted - a fantastic painted Stations of the Cross, a wonderful choir with stained glass windows and still its...

Pyramid

by tompt

Puzzled about the mummies?Well we do have a pyramid too !!The Pyramide of Austerlitz is erected at 12 october 1804 by the french general Auguste F.L.V. de Marmont to commemorate the stay of a 18.000 man army here. Marmont assembled all the french soldiers in the low countries at the heathland between Zeist and Woudenberg to prepare for an english invasion. To keep the men busy he decided to let them built a monument. It was a pyramid of dirt with grass and an obelisk on top. The pyramid was based on his visit to the Gizeh pyramid in Egypt. The obelisk is historical a roman memorial for emperors.Marmont dedicated it to Napoleon who crowned himself emperor that year. In 1806 the pyramid was named Pyramide van Austerlitz, in honor of a battle won by the french at Austerlitz (Czech republic). From then on the village where the armybase was located was also called Austerlitz. The pyramid is...

Hunnebeds: Megalithic Tombs in Drenthe province

by airkarat

More than 50 of these ancient burial sites run along a distinct swath through the province of Drenthe on the West side of Holland bordering Germany. A small number of hunebedden are found in Germany as well, and the terrain becomes more forested with large oak trees, the kind that Hansel and Gretel could easily have become lost in ;) Borger is the site the largest hunebed, as well as the National Hunebeden Information Center. This is a smaller hunebed at Noord Sleen. Get the map and driving directions from Borger and find out what Napoleon and the Nazis thought of these unique sites.

Hunebed in Drenthe (prehistorical grave)

by ATLC

This is a hunebed. Found in the province of Drenthe. People in prehistoric days used to bury their dead like this. Amazing how they made these burial places with the great sidestones, capstones and endstones. There are 54 of them in The Netherlands, all different in size but mostly in the provinces Drenthe and Groningen (up north!).For pictures of them all go see the website. The descriptions, I'm afraid, are in Dutch.

Apeldoorn - royal view over the palace gardens

by vtveen

'Paleis Het Loo' in Apeldoorn is one of the most famous tourist sights in my country. But to add something special to your visit to this royal palace I would highly recommend: make a visit during Easter, Queensday, Whit Sunday/Monday or on a Wednesday in June, July or August.Only on these days the roof of the palace is open for public. A staircase through the attic of the palace will bring you to the roof pavilion. In the older days Queen Mary, wife of Stadtholder William III, used this place for a tea with her maids of honour.I'm sure you will love the views over the baroque gardens with their fountains. A really unique experience !!See also tip of 'Paleis Het Loo' on my Apeldoorn page.

Alkmaar, the Cinderella City

by GYOW

If you have been to Amsterdam and it’s too busy for you then travel north about 35k and in the shadow of Amsterdam you will the city of Alkmaar.  More famously known for its cheese market which first took place in 1622, you can get a taste of it every Friday morning at 10 am, between April and September.  The cheese market is very historic and draws hundreds of people who stand 8 deep around the market square to get a glimpse of the proceedings.  If you manage to get to the front to see properly then it might be worth the crowds but personally I recommend going first thing on a Monday morning when little is open and the narrow streets are a pleasure to explore. The shops open about 1 pm so make sure you have seen most of it by then.  I picked up a brochure and browsed it over a tasty cup of coffee outside one of the many cafes on the square, then set off in almost empty streets. If you go...

Kampen - visit a cigar factory

by vtveen

Kampen, one of the Dutch Hanseatic cities, was formerly known as a city where plenty of cigars were made. It has a history of tobacco and until well into the 20th century the city had several cigar factories. Meanwhile there is not much left of this rich industry. In the city centre is still only one (small) factory: De Olifant (The Elephant). We visited this factory, also because my grandfather and father lived in Kampen and worked as cigar makers. The visit begins with an introductory video about the whole process from tobacco plant to the packing of the cigars in cedar wood boxes. Then follows the tour through the old warehouse; along the bales stored with tobacco, various old machinery, drying rooms and the room where thousands of cigars - after a manual control - are packed by hand. In the 'engine room' we saw how the cigars today are manufactured in a combination of man and...

Eijsden – most southern town of the country

by vtveen

The town of Eijsden is situated south of the well known city of Maastricht. And staying or visiting this very vibrant town, perhaps Eijsden may be a destination for a short trip.Eijsden lies on the borders of the river Maas and has an old centre with lots of monumental buildings and some old cobble stoned streets. Walk around (ask for an information brochure in the town hall) and if you are tired take a cup of coffee or have a lunch on one of the side walk café's.One of the highlights is Castle Eijsden, situated just south of the centre. This is an 17th century building, surrounded by large gardens, which do reach to the river Maas. The castle is closed for visitors, but the park and gardens are open to the public. You can walk around the castle and enjoy the views from different sides. The second Sunday after Whitsunday the so called ‘bronk’ takes place in Eijsden; a Roman Catholic...
