Griendtsveen – an unique peat village

by vtveen

Griendtsveen, together with the neighbouring village of Helenaveen, is one of the two peat villages in ‘De Peel’. The village was founded in 1885 by a company (Family Van de Griendt) which owned large parts of this peat bog in the southern part of the Netherlands. They built a peat factory (nowadays a Bed & Breakfast), a church, workmen-houses, canteen, shops and a café. The family itself had an impressive mansion, with a moat and a beautiful garden. When we visited Griendtsveen it looked like time has stand still is this part of the country and the whole scenery was so quiet and peaceful. We had a cappuccino on the terrace of Café ‘De Morgenstond’, with a view of the canal and one of the old drawbridges and the neo-gothic church from 1895. Afterwards we strolled along the narrow roads and the canals and it felt if we were walking in a kind of movie. We saw the so called...

Oploo – water and windmill

by vtveen

Oploo is one of the few villages with both a water- and windmill. These both mills are standing very close to each other with only a distance of 56 metres (which is supposed to be the shortest in Europe). The watermill, named ‘D’n Ollliemeulen’ is the oldest and was already used in the 18th century; first for milling oil and later it became a flourmill. The people of Oploo decided to build also a windmill, because there wasn’t always water enough in the stream of the ‘Vloet’. The windmill is called ‘De Korenbloem’ and is a wooden mill; a kind of mills typical for this part of the Netherlands.Oploo is a small village in the province of Noord-Brabant and part of the municipality of Sint Anthonis. Once you arrive in Oploo it is impossible to miss the windmill, because its sails, with a height of more than 26 metres, rise above the houses. InformationBoth mills can be visited on Saturday...

Muiden Castle

by traveldave

Muiden is a small town east of Amsterdam that is located at the mouth of the Vecht River. Its biggest attraction is Muiden Castle, the most visited castle in the Netherlands, although its period rooms can only be visited on guided tours.Muiden Castle was originally constructed in 1205 by the Bishop of Utrecht, and was rebuilt by Count Floris V of Holland in 1280. In 1292, Count Floris V was captured and held prisoner in his own castle. During a rescue attempt, the count was killed. Because the count had no successor, the Bishop of Utrecht, Willem van Mechlen took control of the castle. He then set about tearing it down. The castle was rebuilt on its original foundation in 1370 by the Duke of Albrecht, Count of Holland. The old brick fortress is square in shape and features corner towers and a moat. The castle sat abandoned for many years leading to crumbling and decay. Renovations were...

Volendam Harbor

by traveldave

Since its founding, the fishing industry has been an important part of the life and economy of Volendam. Volendam Harbor is located on the Gouwzee, a small landlocked sea. The Gouwzee in turn is connected to the ocean through the IJsselmeer, which gave the fishing fleet access the rich herring grounds of the North Sea. During its heyday, several types of traditional fishing vessels put out to sea from Volendam Harbor to catch herring, a major Dutch food staple. Most of the fishing vessels were wooden, flat-bottomed, sail-powered boats that could easily navigate the shallow inshore waters, as well as the shallow inland canals. The two most popular types were the herring buss and the bomschuiten. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, however, many of these traditional boats gave way to engine-powered steel boats. Nevertheless, there are still many old wooden boats...

Volendam

by traveldave

Volendam is a small village of 22,000 inhabitants located about 12 miles (18 kilometers) northeast of Amsterdam. It used to be primarily a fishing village, but nowadays the tourism industry has become the most important aspect of the town's economy. So now, in the summer many of the inhabitants dress in traditional costumes, which include tight bodices, winged lace caps, and striped aprons for the women; and baggy black pants with silver buttons, and short black jackets over striped shirts for the men. Unfortunately, all this has led to the town and harbor area being overrun with tourists and an abundance of souvenir shops.Volendam was founded after 1357 when the nearby town of Edam built a short canal to the Zuiderzee. Access to the Zuiderzee made Edam's harbor on the IJsselmeer obsolete, and it was filled in as part of a land-reclamation project. A town was built on the reclaimed land...

Bronkhorst, smallest CITY of my country

by vtveen

When visiting Bronkhorst almost nobody will say this village is a real city with 'city rights'. In a matter of fact this settlement became these rights already in the year of 1482. The little church at the square even dates from 1344 !!But the 'city' did never increase and has almost the same size as in the middle ages. A lot of buildings are from these period and walking around on the cobble stoned streets we always feel if we are walking back in time.Bronkhorst is situated on the eastern bank the river IJssel, between the towns of Zutphen and Doesburg. The most original way to come to Bronkhorst is by using the small ferry (pedestrians, bikes and cars) over the river from Brummen.Just stroll along the narrow streets, take a look in one of the galleries, visit the Dickens Museum, do some shopping, walk to the old Jewish Cemetery or have a coffee or tea on one of the side walk...

Castle ‘Huis Bergh’ – inside and outside

by vtveen

Just outside the town of ‘s Heerenberg, close to the border with Germany, we found on one of our bike trips through the Netherlands Castle ‘Huis Bergh’. This castle is supposed to be one of the biggest and most important castles in my country. Its history goes back to the 13th century; the most important parts of the castle, still existing today, date from the 14th, 15th and 17th century. The castle has been destroyed a couple of times, but each time it has been restored; for the last time in the year of 1941. In that time the castle belonged to mister J.H. van Heek, a very rich industrialist.InsideThe castle is famous for its art collection (mainly early Italian paintings, a lot of historical portraits ), weapon room, an exhibition of the Bergh mint and much more, among them. We could visit the castle on our own and there were room stewards to explain the many treasures we saw. For...

Woudrichem, authentic fortress with a ‘blemish'

by vtveen

Woudrichem is one of the official eleven Dutch fortress towns and its name ‘Walrichsheim' was already found in the year of 866. It became known as Woudrichem as from 1290, and could already be considered a town at that time, having a sheriff, aldermen and a council. It became city rights in 1356. Nowadays Woudrichem – the original fortress – is a quaint little town with cobble stoned roads and lots of historical houses and buildings, still surrounded by the medieval ramparts. It was just a pleasure to walk around along the beautiful old houses and over the ramparts with great views of the Waal and Maas rivers with ships coming and going. Woudrichem has a flour mill “Nooit Gedagt”, standing on the ramparts and still operating. This mill was built in the nineties of the last century and replaced the original mill from 1662, which was destroyed during World War II. Another important...

'Nederland' - ultimate destination for foreigners

by vtveen

This little settlement should be the ultimate destination for foreigners visiting my country. Nothing 'cooler' than saying, you have visited 'Nederland'. 'Nederland' is situated about 5 km's from Blokzijl, the nearest town. Nowadays there are just a couple of farms and houses, surrounded by typical flat Dutch scenery of meadows, water, waving reed and it is very close to the National Park 'de Weerribben'. In the older days 'Nederland' was much bigger and even had an own school. On the moment you will not find the original place-name sign, because it has been stolen very often. Due to this the council decided not to replace it any longer. But there is a 'surrogate' sign, so you still can proof you have been to 'Nederland'.The easiest way to visit Nederland is by car, but far more interesting is to make a bike tour.Directions: www.viamichelin.com
