Nijbroek and its old church

by vtveen

Nowadays Nijbroek is one of those peaceful and quiet rural villages in the Netherlands. And driving, biking or walking around it is almost unbelievable it ever had city rights and there were plans to make it a real city. Most probably it was cancelled because the city of Deventer was too close to Nijbroek.Nijbroek was a separate municipality until 1820, when it was merged with VoorstNijbroek is located in the middle of a polder, which was reclaimed by monks in the 14th century. In 1814 the area around the village had its last flooding. Originally Nijbroek has a so called ribbon development along the Middendijk and the most historical buildings/farmhouses are standing along this dike. A lot of the heritage of Nijbroek can be seen when walking the so called ‘Niebroekerpad’, a signposted path through the rural landscape. See for info and a map:...

Willemstad - fortress on the waterfront

by vtveen

William of Orange gave his name to the town of Willemstad. Yet the town does not owe its existence to him but to the marquis of Bergen op Zoom, Jan IV of Glymes. He ordered that some salt marshes should be drained and surrounded by dykes. That’s were the village of Ruygenhil came into being in 1565.In 1582 the Province of Brabant gave the village to Prince William of Orange in compensation for what he had spent and lost in the “cause of freedom”. After his dead in 1584 his son Prince Maurits named the town Willemstad (William’s Town), as we call it in Dutch.Willemstad is one of the most beautiful fortresses of the Netherlands, which easily could be visited on your own just strolling around. But it would be much better if you follow the signs ‘VVV’ (Tourist Information) and asked for a leaflet or city walk. It is for sure you will see more interesting sights and will understand more of...

Kinderdijk, on a stormy day

by vtveen

The nineteen windmills of Kinderdijk - built in 1740 - are one of the most well-known tourist sites in the Netherlands. It is the largest group of windmills standing more or less together in my country and a perfect place to visit and to learn more about the everlasting fight of the Dutch against the water. To be honest the views of the windmills, the water and the meadows are typically Dutch as long as you don’t turn around seeing the houses and factories coming closer and closer. But since the year of 1997 the windmills of Kinderdijk are an UNESCO World Heritage Site and I hope the scenery will not be spoilt even more.Mostly tourists hope to have nice and sunny weather when visiting an outdoor site, but during our (last) visit with relatives from New Zealand to the mills of Kinderdijk we caught a rainy and STORMY day. This really bad weather has it own charm in a Dutch polder: walking...

Voorst - Verborgen Tuinen (Hidden Gardens)

by vtveen

Although existing more than 10 years and located in a nearby village of our hometown, we never had heard about this garden. On an arts and crafts market we got a leaflet of the (officially called) “Verborgen Tuinen van Bert Loman” and decided for a visit. The garden, which consists of nine smaller gardens, is really hidden behind some ordinary houses along an ordinary road in the small village of Voorst. It has an area of about 1500 m2 with many different species of trees and other plants, mostly perennials (it is said there should be about 300 of them). Nooks, vistas and seats make the garden very varied and exciting. Walking around we were really jealous of such a beautiful and well maintained garden. But most stunning of the ´Verborgen Tuinen` is the combination of this varied garden with the really beautiful art objects of natural materials and flowers. These objects are made by...

Arnhem - Winter in the ‘Open Air Museum’

by vtveen

On one of the coldest days of the year (2006) we went to the Netherlands Open Air Museum (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum) to experience ‘the Winter in the Museum’. Since a couple of years the museum is also open during the winter season, which means from early December till mid January (see for more info below or on the website of the museum). During this time there are special winter activities in the museum. The most remarkable is the outside skating ring, where one can enjoy ice skating and it is no problem if you don’t have your own skates, you can borrow them free of charge.Every day there are different (winter) activities like demonstrations of old Dutch crafts, singing of a choir in a church, a procession with lanterns for children and baking bread on open fires. We saw also a movie with pictures of some real Dutch winters.Of course a lot of the old buildings, farmhouses and mills are...

Alkmaar – Wildemanshofje

by vtveen

Most (foreign) visitors of Alkmaar are just heading to the cheese market on Friday mornings. This is of course one of the highlights in the Netherlands, but if you have some spare time I highly recommend walking around the old city of Alkmaar. At least we were happy running away from the crowds. Along one of the canals in Alkmaar we saw a sign for the ‘Wildemanshofje’. After an easy walk - perhaps 500 meters from the city center - we found this hidden gem at the ‘Oudegracht’.We passed the gate building with a sculpture of a ‘wild man’; referring at the name of the founder - Gerrit Florisz Wildeman - of this ‘hofje’. He built these almshouses in 1717 for poor elderly woman from Alkmaar. The courtyard with a symmetric garden and lined with linden trees just coming into bud is surrounded by 24 (small) houses. In the garden is another sculpture of a wild man with a club. We have visited many...

Apeldoorn - Queen’s Day Attack Monument

by vtveen

One year after the terrible attack on Queen’s Day 2009 a permanent monument to the victims was unveiled by Queen Beatrix and Mayor De Graaf. The monument was designed by glass artist Menno Jonker. The monument is a granite box containing several glass balloons, which symbolize vulnerability, celebration and mourning; seven white balloons represent the seven innocent victims who died in the attack. The artist has chosen the colour white, because it is used for mourning, especially to give expression to a link between death and a kind of hope. The names of the seven victims are engraved in the armoured glass plate, which is placed on the box with balloons. The monument - 180 cm wide and 64 cm high - has been placed opposite the ‘Naald’, a monument in Apeldoorn where the car of the perpetrator of the attack on the Dutch Royal Family - during Queens Day 2009 - crashed.DirectionsBy car: follow...

The province of Groningen

by sim1

When you say "Groningen" everyone automatically thinks about the beautiful city of Groningen. It really is a wonderful city, but the province of Groningen is wonderful as well. It has a lot more to offer, than a lot of people think. So I build a special page about this part of the country to show you this beautiful province in the north of The Netherlands. It's hard for me to describe this province in real 'must see' activities and tips. I think it the total effect of this province that gives it it's beauty and atmosphere. You have to come here and experience the landscape, the seemingly endless view over the pastures, the small rivers, windmills, old churches, picturesque villages. http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/319/

This is not a city that you will probably will visit, but I still want to tell you a bit about it, because it is has been my hometown for many years. In this picture you can see the basilica in the center of Oldenzaal. It is called the `Plechelmus Basiliek`.Oldenzaal is a little town in the eastern part of Holland in the Province of Overijssel. It is a nice little town, nothing really spectacular. But it has some nice old buildings, a lot of atmosphere and some great events. It is a great town to live in. You can read much more about my hometown on my Oldenzaal page. http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/6ff76/
