Hernen Castle

by sim1

I visited Hernen Castle in September and I enjoyed my visit to this castle a lot. The castle is so old and still in its original state. There is no furniture at all in this castle though, but the architecture and still being in its orinal state is what makes it special.Hernen Castle is a castle with a moat around it, dating back to the 14th century. Because this castle was hardly used since the 17th century it hasn't been changed at all since those days. It is quite an extra-ordinary castle in the Netherlands, because it has some unique architecture. It is one of the important examples of defendable houses in the Netherlands.Hernen Castle is in the Province of Gelderland and not that far from the city of Arnhem.http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/707fa/

Appingedam

Appingdam in the Province of Groningen: I've been here so many times in my life. It was only 10 kilometers away from where I used to live, and it is the place where I went to school as a teenager. Appingedam is a nice little town, famous for its "hanging kitchens". It is nice to stroll around in Appingedam, but the best way to see it is by canoe! I've written a page about it in which I want to let you see Apingedam from a different perspective than normal.... from the water! The trip starts in Wirdum, and we slowly paddle to Appingedam. I always used to bike this route to school, so for me it is a bit of a flashback in time. I always looked at the canal while I was biking, spot the birds and see the flowers waving in the wind along the canal. Now I am on the canal, and I am looking up.... it was a wonderful day, beautiful weather, a clear blue sky, and I had wonderful canoe trip. And I...

Hoeksmeer

Hahaha, you can't further "off the beaten path" than this... Hoeksmeer in the Province of GroningenGroningen is a perfect place to go birdwatching. It is an area with green pastures, canals, and newly created wetlands. And Hoeksmeer is one of these newly created wetlands. I love this place in the northern part of Groningen. It is only a couple of kilometers from the town where I used to live. By the locals it is called "vogeltjes land" which means translated "birdsland".But birds are not the only thing you can see here. The other thing is this beautiful windmill called "The Meervogel"http://www.virtualtourist.com/m/1c048/70759/

Cities - Tilburg

by Imaniac

Tilburg is a student city in the province of Brabant, It's a big city close to Breda and Den Bosch. Although it hasn't got many great buildings or museums it is a really fun city. There are numerous events going on such as the biggest fun fair in the country. And it's also a great place to go out to eat or drink. It's the city with the most pubs for every citizen in The Netherlands.

Zaltbommel is a charming fortified city just a couple of minutes away from Den Bosch. The boundaries of the ancient city center are now in use as parks. Inside the center you will find many historical building dating back to the middle ages. It's also very nice to take a stroll along the river Waal.

Middachten Castle – romantic Christmas feeling

by vtveen

Castle Middachten was first mentioned in 1190 and originally a reinforced house with moats and thick walls, where the residents could feel relatively safe during attacks. The castle boasts a strategic location between the high Veluwezoom and the low swampland in a loop of the river Ijssel. Castle Middachten has never been sold and has been inherited by both male and female lines and has been in the hands of the Steenre, Raesfelt, Reede, Bentinck and nowadays Ortenburg families.Castle Middachten can be visited a couple of times a year, but I would strongly recommend a visit during Christmas time (around mid December). The Ortenburg family opens their ‘home’. After paying the entrance fee we first visited the castle and enjoyed the nicely decorated rooms on the ground floor and the impressive stairwell with beautiful woodcarvings and stucco on the dome. We were welcomed by the sounds of a...

Valkenburg - Christmas Market

by vtveen

We never had been to the caves of Valkenburg in the Dutch province of Limburg and after heard/read some rather good reviews we decided visiting them during the annual subterranean Christmas Market. Still being aboveground there was some light snowfall in the village and a lot of people were finding their way to one of the caves with Christmas Markets. We decided for the so called ‘Gemeentegrot’, being the oldest and biggest subterranean market.Once inside it was quite an experience strolling through the labyrinth of galleries and huge halls of this former marl grotto. These were all lined with market booths and there was even a café. On some places there were rather nice Christmas decorations, without being very stunning. But to be honest we were absolutely very disappointed by the kind of booths we saw. Most of them are just offering quite common articles and knickknacks (which can be...

Staverden - just strolling around the castle

by vtveen

Castle Staverden isn’t a real castle, but more a manor. In popular speech it is still called ‘castle’ because of its history of more than 800 years and the fact that four buildings have been built on this place. The first one was a hunting lodge used by the counts and dukes of Gelre, dating back to 1298. The same year Staverden became city rights - granted by German King Rudolf to count Reinout of Gelderland - and nowadays most probably is the smallest city on earth with its 40 inhabitants living in the manor and farmhouses of the estate. The present ‘castle’ was built in 1905. Although living rather close to this castle we never visited it till one of these lovely sunny autumn days end of October 2009. From the car park we walked in the restored 17th century garden of the castle, surrounded by a moat and a stream called ‘Staverdense Beek’. We passed the peacock statue, an ice cellar...

Amersfoort, seen from the water

by vtveen

Although quite an old city Amersfoort is less well known than a lot of other Dutch cities. I don’t just understand, because it is such a nice and pleasant town, which has a lot to offer to visitors.Perhaps the best way (or at least one of the nicest ways of exploring is by a boat trip. We were very lucky catching one of these warm and sunny September days when we made our boat trip. It was absolutely relaxing on the water, no other traffic, trees with the first (yellow) signs of autumn and great views on the old monumental buildings along the moats and canals. Quay-walls are full with plants and flowers; the guide told us there are 250 different species, among them several which are on the ‘red list’ of endangered Dutch plants. Must be a bonus when they are flowering !!We did the so called ‘Westroute’ through a couple of canals around the inner city, passing bridges and water gates....

Kennemerland Sand Dunes

by ant1606

The park of Zuid-Kennemerland, just outside of the city of Utrecht, is the perfect location for a day at the beach and a pic-nic under the canopy or by a pond. Wind creates sand dunes and these are covered by various types of vegetation. Shrubs are the main greenery where the wind blows harder while tall trees take root in more sheltered areas. Footpaths and cycling trails are quite popular. We rode through the park on a Sunday among beachgoers who fill the dedicated parking spots for bicycles, some of which are guarded for a fair daily fee around the most popular beaches. Not the tallest sand dunes I've seen but it's quite a nice park well worth a visit.Free access for pedestrian and riders, parking fee for caged people.
