Vaalserberg – 322,5 meters above sea level

by vtveen

The southern part of the province of Limburg has a lot of hills (for us Dutchies it is almost mountainous) and close to the town of Vaals, near the border with Germany, on the Vaalserberg is the highest point of the Netherlands. This point is 322,5 meters above Normal Amsterdam Level (although there are sources saying it is even 322,7 m) and is marked with a plaque, just in front of border post number 1. Another sign is referring to the lowest point in my country: Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel.Just a couple of meters away lies the so called ‘Drielandenpunt’ (Three Country Point), where the borders of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany intersect. From 1830 till 1919 it was even a ‘Four Country Point’ with the mini state of Neu Moresnet (in the meantime belonging to Belgium). The boundary lines of these four countries can be seen in the cobbles. The whole area on top of the Vaalserberg is a...

Denekamp, Singraven Estate - lovely spot

by vtveen

Singraven Estate is located in a part of the Netherlands called Twente, nearby the town of Denekamp. I consider it as one of our most beautiful areas, offering typical varied scenery with meadows, forests, old wooden banks, streams, soft rolling hills and (most of all) quietness. Within this region Singraven Estate is absolutely one of the highlights and when travelling in this part of the Netherlands you really should take a visit. The 17th century castle has parts dating back to the year 1380. It has a picturesque location between the meandering River Dinkel (take a look at this aerial picture). Nowadays the castle/mansion is a museum with guided visits. The park offers some great walks and bike rides; also a nice starting point for a bicycle ride through Twente, which we did during our last visit. The water mill of Singraven - already built in 1448 - gets its water also from the Dinkel...

Joure, Douwe Egberts ‘vlecke’

by vtveen

Douwe Egberts is the most well known and famous Dutch coffee roaster (although it now belongs to Sara Lee). Already in 1753 Egbert Douwes opened a shop in Joure, named "De Witte Os’’, selling a large variety of goods: coffee, tobacco and tea were their main products, but they also sold sweets, sugar, rice, vermicelli, chicory, cinnamon, saffron, syrup, vinegar, chocolate and dried fruit. His son Douwe Egberts was also in ‘coffee business’ and joined his parents. Although his father was well known in Joure, it was Douwe Egberts who was responsible for the expansion of the company and still has the name ‘Douwe Egberts’.Joure calls itself a ‘vlecke’ (a Frisian word), indicating a place larger than a village, but smaller than a town. Yet it is very pleasant to walk around enjoying the quiet Frisian way of life. Every where in the village one can feel and smell the history of Douwe Egberts....

Anne Frank Statue

by DueSer

Although this is actually on a fairly busy street, it's a small statue and not, like some people assume, right in front of the Anne Frank House, so it is easy to miss. It's a charming statue though, and should not be passed up.Part of the charm comes from the size and pose of the sculpture. It's small and sweet and the way she stands makes her look like just a regular girl, which she was in some ways. While the house is located on the Prinsengracht, this statue is around the corner on Westermarkt/Raadhuisstraat by the Westerkerk.

Dutch castles are not worse than German or French

by AlexanderRu

I would never think of Holland when planning the trip to see the castles. However there are numerous fortresses in this old country. Castle Muiderslot in Muiden is worth to see even when you travel with kids. Unforgettable atmosphere of medieval fortress, educational entertainment for the children, you can try, play, touch... Very interesting for everybody. There is also the inner garden and wild falkons which you can try to hold with the help of instructor...De Haar Castle in Haarzuilens is privately owned by the actual duke. But public is allowed. And main time to visit this place is during the Fantasy Fair or Knight tourneers. Just visit web page of this place to check the dates. Imagine our dissapointment when we came there at 5PM and saw the closure of Fantasy Fair with numerous Elfs, Goblins and other fairytale creatures!.. One more romantic place to visit. Your kids will also...

Woerden

by margaretvn

Woerden is an old city that is very quickly growing. The old centre is small and very pleasant though. Woerden began as a town on the dykes along the Rhine and the Lange Linschoten and was given its town charter in 1372. There is a castle "Kastel van Worden" which was built between 1405-1415. It is now used partly as apartments for young people needing sheltered accommodation; you can go into the forecourt of the castle though. In 1575-1576 The Spanish tried to take the town during the 30 Years war but did not succeed. Then the French besieged the castle in 1672 but they too were unsuccessful. The town museum is a really beautiful building with a step gable, it used to be the town hall.

Brielle

by margaretvn

The lovely town and port of Brielle is worth a visit. The 18th century fortifications are still mostly intact and the town played an important part in the first steps to Dutch independence from Spain. It is a protected town today and there are many beautiful old houses, some dating from the 1600's - so spend time looking up at the wonderful gables and decorations. The famous Dutch admiral van Tromp was born here. There is a 15th century Brabant Gothic style church - the Catharijnekerk and the Historisch Museum is worth visiting. Here you can learn about the "Beggers of the Sea" these were are group of Dutch and Flemish noble men. At the beginning of the Inquisition they fled to across the North sea, plundering ships and generally causing problems for English and German ports. In the spring of 1572 they were forced to leave England (where some of their ships were berthed). Under the...

Nieuwpoort

by margaretvn

This is a really lovely little fortified town, that got its city charter in 1283. The main street dates from the 17th century and is still almost completely intact. The city walls, which were built to protect the town from attacks by the French are intact. they also save the town from flooding - the town is located along the river "de Lek" . There is a town hall which is built over a lock. It dates from 1696 and there is an arsenal dating from 1781. You can get there with the bus (nr 154) from Rotterdam. We by car following alongside the river which we had to cross with a little ferry. There are ferries at several points along the river so you can combine the trip with a visit to Shcoonhoven or Gouda. We had stopped at Streefkerk before going to Nieuwpoort and there we had had coffee and made a lovely (8 kilometre) walk along the dike and then through the polders and seen some lovely...

A hike near Nijbroek in the province Gelderland

by Pijlmans

Nijbroek is a small village a bit north of the city Apeldoorn in the province Gelderland.Around the village is a 14 km long marked hike along a brook and through pasture. A big part of the hike is over unpaved trails, so you are really walking through the Dutch nature. The hike can be shortened into a 9 km walk.See the link below for more information!
