Klein Amsterdam - the other Amsterdam

by vtveen

Klein Amsterdam means 'Little Amsterdam'. Almost every tourist to the Netherlands will visit Amsterdam, but I think nobody ever has been to 'Klein Amsterdam'. And even my fellow countrymen hardly know where to find 'KA'. So it is rather challenging to visit both Amsterdam and Klein Amsterdam while visting the Netherlands.Although many cities in the Netherlands call themself 'Little Amsterdam' there is just one small settlement, which has the official name of 'Klein Amstrerdam' and it has also some real signs with its name.In all respects it is a completely different world between 'Klein Amsterdam' and her big sister. In a very rural setting between the villages of Klarenbeek, Voorst and Hall do live 30 families with a total of just 100 people and there is just one shop. The settlement is concentrated in a triangle of roads: Heuvelderweg, Gravenstraat and Diederikweg.Nobody could tell me...

Schiermonnikoog's nature

by bgjulieta

The island Schiermonnikoog for me it is the best place to spend your weekend and do some physical activity. You can go there by ferry from Gent and rent a bike to see all the island. If you prefer, you can bring your own bike. :-) Cars with kites (I don't know their exact name) are also a good way to exercise but I didn't have a chance to try them. The first pic is with a triangle because it is taken from a CD.Sheeps and other animals were present on the island.

Dutch wine? Yes!

by ATLC

A vineyard this far north in The Netherlands is rather odd, to say the least. It's about 10 kms from my hometown Brielle near a rural hamlet called Biert. It's also near Rotterdam. Definitely a road or cycling trip.So Domain De Vier Ambachten offers you a wide range of wines of which I have yet to taste one. Tasting notes to follow (I'm a bit apprehensive, hahaha!).

Waterfall of Loenen, the highest of the Netherland

by vtveen

As my country is rather flat, there are not many waterfalls in streams and rivers in the Netherlands. But not far away of Apeldoorn you will find the ‘Niagara of the Veluwe’. This waterfall in the so called ‘Vrijenbergspreng’ has a fall of 15 metres (in 4 steps). As a matter of fact there is a second waterfall upstream with two steps and about 10 metres high. Both waterfalls are situated in a ‘spreng’, which is a dug water course. These man made artificial brooks on the Veluwe stream for kilometres from a dug spring with groundwater to the end, usually another (natural) river or canal. It is rather easily to recognise these ‘sprengen’: in the beginning (near the artificial spring) having often steep and deep slopes and always being as straight as possibleThe ‘Vrijenbergspreng’ - with the two waterfalls - was dug in 1825 and the water flew into the ‘Apeldoorns Kanaal’ to keep the water...

Sloten, the smallest of the 11 Frisian cities

by vtveen

The province of Friesland has 11 cities, world famous for its ‘Elfstedentocht’; a (speed) skating tour and competition, conducted on frozen canals, streams and lakes and along these 11 cities. Sloten was founded in the 13th century on a crossing of a road and the river Ee and became an important trade centre. On August 30 of the year of 1426 it first was mentioned as a city and at the end of the 16th century Sloten became a fortified town with four gates and a wall and moat around the town. The history of the city is reflected in its centre with its protected views in a pedestrian area.Nowadays Sloten is a pleasant town, popular by people who love water sports (as everywhere in Friesland), biking or hiking. A visit to Sloten means walking along the canal ‘Het Diep’, which divides the town in two parts, with several historic merchants houses from the 17th and 18th century. Looking to the...

De Biesbosch

by margaretvn

"De Biesbosch" is a National Park. It is basically a wetlands area with opportunites for canoeing, walking, birdwatching - quieter forms of recreation are encouraged so that nature is not too disturbed. There are boat trips through the park along the waterways.De Biesbosch has a long history its history can be traced back to the "St Elizabeth's Flood of 1421" - this flood engulfed 16 villages. It only became a National Park in 1994. The area is actually a sort of sort of several rivers with lots of narrow or wide creeks. Importabntly the area is one of few remaining fresh-water tidal areas in Europe. The NP is divided between two provinces (North Brabant and South Holland) by the Nieuw Merewede Canal. The whole park is 9,000 hectares in area. Vegatation in DE Biesbosch is mainly willow woods which have grown out of the willow shoots of old "withy- beds" after years of neglect. These...

Ter Apel – Monastery Domus Novae Lucis

by vtveen

In 1464 Jacobus Wilthingh donated his rural estate ‘Apell’ to the Order of the Holy Cross. To build the monastery of Ter Apel, they used almost 100 years till 1561. After the reformation in the Netherlands (1594) the latest prior of the monastery of the Holy Cross Brothers became the first Protestant clergyman. Between 1600 and 1930 the monastery deteriorated more and more and the remaining parts were restored by the city of Groningen. Since 1992 it is one of ‘the top 100 Unesco monumental buildings’ in the Netherlands. It houses nowadays a museum of religious art and the history of the monasteryWe had to drive a long way to Ter Apel to visit the Monastery, but it was worth the effort. The building stands in the middle of lawns and is surrounded by old trees and woods. It is fantastic to walk around and just to look at this impressive building, to indulge the serenity of this peaceful...

Niehove – a perfect ‘wierde’ village

by vtveen

In the Dutch province of Groningen ‘wierde’ is the name for an artificial dwelling hill. These man made hills gave the people a dry shelter during high tides and floods. The ‘wierde’ of Niehove is inhabited for more than 2200 years. Its original name was Suxwort (which means ‘Zuidwierde’ – South’wierde’) and it was an island for many years. Nowadays Niehove is located in the rural part of northwest Groningen. To be honest we had never heard of Niehove before our visit to Groningen. But we saw some aerial photo’s and did read an article about the village. So we decided to take a look at this really ‘off the beaten path’ sight.Niehove is located in the middle of the rural countryside of Groningen, completely flat and more or less empty. But as many villages Niehove itself has also trees and is a green island in the landscape. We just walked around through the narrow streets to the ‘top’ of...

Fortress Bourtange – back into the year of 1742

by vtveen

Although the first fortress of Bourtange dates back till 1580, when Prince William of Orange ordered to build the fortress along the road from Groningen to Hannover. It played an important role in the Eighty Years' War between the ‘Netherlands and the Spanish occupiers. Later the fortress was extended till it reached its maximum size in 1742. The fortress was dismantled in 1851and became more or less a normal rural village, but around 1960 people left, shops were closed and there was almost nothing left of the fortress. On that moment the municipality of Vlagtwedde decided to rebuild the fortress to its state of 1742.Next to the car park is the Information Centre, which provides general information about Bourtange. We bought a map of the fortress (€ 1,50) and got also a brochure. If you are interested to visit one or more museums you have to buy your ticket in this centre.Visitors have...

Lutjegast - Abel Tasman village

by vtveen

After our first visit to New Zealand and Abel Tasman National Park we became interested in the history of this Dutch explorer. One day we decided to visit the village of Lutjegast where Abel Tasman was born in the year of 1603.In this small village in the province of Groningen (in the north of the Netherlands) are several memorials, which remind of this important inhabitant. First of all there is a small museum called "Abel Tasman Kabinet". Here we saw maps, books, among them a copy of Abel's ship's journal from 1642-1643. There are also pictures and paintings about the journeys Abel Tasman made and an interesting stamp collection. Before we could visit the museum the local grocery owner had to phone a volunteer to open the museum. We were the only visitors that day and so we had a more or less private tour. One can notice the people of Lutjegast are still proud of their 'son'. In the...
