beautiful gardens

by margaretvn

A visit to the Ada Hofman Botanical Pool Gardens in Gramsbergen is certainly worthwhile. It is "off the beaten track" but if you like gardens this is a beautiful spot and an oasis of peace. She has created 30 differet garend with 50 garden pools in them but they all form one big garden. She has made one of the biggest collections of plants, bushes and trees in The Netherlands. In the gardens she has also put animals such as frogs, little lizards, and salamanders. Her green frog population is the largest in the country. There are of course lots of butterflies and a Kingfisher is regularly seen in the garden. I have to admit to having a "thing" about frogs and love catching them on photos. I had said to Koos a few days before we went on holiday that I dreamed about taking a photo of a frog on a waterlily. Koos said that it would be difficult to get. BUT in these lovely gardens I got photo...

Hiking in Holland

by Pijlmans

The Netherlands appear to be a small and overcrowded country, however there still is quite a lot of nature to explore! On my Netherlands page you will find descriptions and links to websites with information about long and short hikes in the Netherlands.Although these sites are mostly in Dutch, you can easily find information about marked walking routes, for which you only need to know the starting-point.

National Monument Day

by ATLC

The theme this year is: Monuments of the 20th centuryDuring the year most of these monuments are not open to the public but on 8 and 9september 2007 , they will be.On the photo is my personal monument. For over 10 years I have been dreaming of owning this yellow apartment flat in Rotterdam and what I would do with it. I'd live on the top 2 floors and turn the round bit into a restaurant for private dinners and parties. All the other apartments would be galleries or ateliers for creative people and musicians, I think. It borders on the Museumpark and I simply love it!

Spend some time in Gouda

by JREllison

Gouda is a small Dutch city (about 70,000) 25 minutes by train or auto from Rotterdam. The center of the city is a pedestrian friendly zone with very few automobiles. Everybody has at least heard of Gouda cheese, well this is where it comes from. But here you can get the real thing! Aged to your personal likes. I perfer young Gouda. The city center is the market place, Saturday was market day when we were there.

Take a ferry

by Martin_S.

the Netherlands is a country filled with water and much of the land used to be underwater...there are canals, lakes and ponds everywhere.. most of the time there are bridges or dykes over and around the water, but here in Schoonhoven we came across a ferry, so decided to travel a different way.

Blokzijl - old harbour city

by vtveen

In the older days Blokzijl was a harbour situated along the so called 'Zuiderzee'. There was a lot of trade with the town of Amsterdam and you can recognise the 'Amsterdam school' in the style of the houses. Around the harbour and in a couple of narrow streets you will find some very beautiful examples of houses from the 17th century.Nowadays Blokzijl is very busy in the summer season with lots of motorboats, yachts and sailing boats. Specially in and around the lock it is always a hustle and bustle. But in other seasons it is a very quiet and nice little town with a small museum, some galleries and a couple of shops and nice restaurants. Just relaxing to stroll around.Directions: www.viamichelin.com

Neer - Friedesse Water Mill

by vtveen

I found this water mill in a little village, called Neer, in the province of Limburg. Just followed the signs after a cup of coffee on the terrace of ‘Boothuis De Troost’, which has a wonderful view over the river Maas. The water mill is situated along the Neerbeek, a small stream which ends in the Maas. This mill is restored in 2002 after being out of use for more than 50 years. The mill has been built in the year of 1717 and the mill house has the same age. The water mill is now (again) a grain mill and is open for visitors during summertime (May till September) on Sunday afternoons from 1.00 till 5.00 pm.Neer offers more for an interesting day: a monumental church and a brewery (De Lindeboom)with a ‘Beershop’, which is open Wednesday till Friday 2.00 – 6.00 pm and Saturday 10.00 am – 2.00 pm.The church square is starting point for two sign posted walking routes around Neer.Neer is...

Oostvaarderplassen

by margaretvn

This National Park is wonderful, it developed quite by chance really. until a few decades ago the 5600 hectare park was under water. In 1968 the polder was drained and earmarked for development. The area is the lowest and so the wettest area of the province Flevoland. While decisions were being made about its future nature took its chance and started to develop the largest wetland area in The Netherlands with a flora and fauna diversity of national and international importantance. The park lies between the cities of Lelystad and Almere and has little as possible human interference. It is managed by Stadsbosbeheer. It has a wet area where visiting Greylag Geese keep the area from being overgrown, and a dry area where hundreds of hoofed animals such as wild cow, deer and ponies graze. The open areas are broken up with shrubland and trees with its own wildlife. The park was given the...

Leerdam - glass city

by vtveen

Leerdam, just a small city along the river Linge, had its first (German) glass blowers in the year of 1765. Nowadays it is THE glass city of the Netherlands and full of activities with or around glass. We started our visit in the 'Glas Centrum', situated in an old timber mill along the river. Sitting on a gallery we watched the glass blowers at work. It is really fascinating to see how a liquid bubble of glass is transformed in a master piece of glass; there are always two glass blowers working together. In the centre is also a shop, which sells vases and other glass objects. The 'Crystal Shop' is the shop of the 'Royal Crystal Leerdam Factory' with examples of glass services and other objects. The shop is located next to the huge glass factory. A little bit further along the river is the National Glass Museum. Last but not least you will find several glass galleries in the city of...
