To experience the relaxed atmosphere of the village and to have a closer look at the details, it is worth to make a small walk in the scenic village of Oud Aalden. So you can have a closer look at the traditional Saxony farmhouses with thatched roofs. Interesting are especially the barns with the traditional plaited straw parts at the walls.

Oud Aalden is a village with a brink like many so called 'brinkdorpen' in Drenthe. The 'brink' was originally a place at the edge of the village where the cows and sheep gathered in the evening and morning. Nowadays the brink is located often in the centre of the village. It's a nice green open space with huge old oaks. These oaks were originally planted for construction purposes.

The brink is characteristic for many villages in the province Drenthe and protected as cultural heritage.

The old Saxon farmhouse 't Hoes van Hol-an exists allready since 1668. Since 1965 the cows left the farmerhouse and ’t Hoes van Hol-an became a restaurant. At the entrance is also a shop selling traditional and local products from Drenthe.

The inside of the former farmhouse looks like a museum. There are many objects from the time the building was still a farmhouse. Also you can see in front the traditional interior with fireplace and furniture.

In the traditional farmhouses people used to sleep in the livingroom. Look behind the doors of what looks like a a cupboard and you will see the beds, the so-called 'bedstee'. The beds are rather short. Probably the people slept half sitting. As kid I slept once in a bedstee in the old farmhouse of my grandparents.

The old Saxon farmhouse 't Hoes van Hol-an exists allready since 1668. Since 1965 the cows left the farmhouse and ’t Hoes van Hol-an became a place for a drink or one of the very known pancakes. There is also a shop selling traditional and local products from Drenthe.

As kid I was allready used to come here with my parents. Also nowadays I like to visit the village Oud Aalden and to show this traditonial village with its Saxon farmerhouses to visitors. The Hoes of Hol-an is a nice place to stop for a drink. I also brought VT friends here from Nigeria, Singapore and Germany.

You can choose one of the 50 different pancakes. The last time I visited the place with a group we ordered a pancake buffet. We could choose ourselves besides 'boerenjongens' also for pineapple, ginger, sausage, bacon or cheese. At all the tables you have syrup and powdered Sugar.

The restaurant is open from the 1th of March till the 1th of December from 11am till 8pm.

Favorite Dish: Of the almost 50 different pancakes, I like especially the one with the boerenjongens (farmerboys). Boerenjongens is a traditonal alcoholic drink with raisins. You can also take the boerenjongens in a glass and eat with a small spoon.
